What it lacks in emotional involvement it makes up for in wild and crazy stunts and computer generated effects. Non stop action, Must see in 3D.

The movie pales in comparison to the book.
And they changed most of the details from the book, which detracted from it as well.
I wish they had done with this movie, what they did with The Martian, which was to just cut things out, not change them.
Really disappointed in this film.
(Anyone want to buy a used BluRay?)
I saw it 2d small screen. Not much emotional involvement here. Great CGI. We've seen at least one more involving movie that I can recall that utilize avatars --- in that 2009 movie; Avatar.I rate it: Just ok. Not much story here. Just a quest and a little drama between those involved in the effort to claim the top prize. At no time was I on the edge of my seat. Nor was I concerned about the welfare of any of the protagonists. I felt no personal involvement. Perhaps the younger among us will see it differently.

...some eye candy special effects in the beginning but it gets old and boring toward the end.
I saw it a couple of hours ago and it it didn't stay with me at all - mainly because of the lack of emotional involvement.
How can you be emotionally involved with avatars?
The villain wasn't even scary.
I'd give it a C.
Maybe my priorities have changed, but I saw this last night with my two boys, and perhaps I think less critically and instead experience the joys of a movie through them. They liked it, with the exception of my younger son who covered his eyes at some of the kissing scenes. And then there was the bathroom scene out of The Shining when I was waiting for the punchline that thankfully never came.I liked the movie, and its references to movies of the past, specifically Back to the Future. The Zemeckis Rubik's Cube which reverses time sixty minutes. Cool.n Basically Willy Wonka on steroids.
I think if you take the movie at face value, don't look for deep messages, aren't looking for the answers to all of life's problems, aren't looking for an experience akin to climbing Mt. Rushmore, and have either an interest in gaming, or the displeasure of two kids who have an interest in gaming, then I think this can be an enjoyable film.
Frankly, I hope I live long enough that I too can be part of the Oasis.

...my take is that it was designed to be a lot of fun with wider appeal than might be typical for this genre of movie. Not heavy on messages or moral preaching, not a lot of character development and a predictable plot but wow, incredible CGI eye candy. Great 80s sound track and a bazillion references to other movies and 80s era pop culture. I saw /heard the IMAX 3D version and was impressed. It was a wild and crazy 2:20.
Glad you mentioned the music. I enjoyed that part of the film as well, and my kids singing along to Twisted Sister's We're Not Going to Take It is worlds better than them singing along to the latest Justin Bieber tune, in my ancient male dude opinion. Though I did wish they turned up the music a little in the mix.
...not sure if you're referring to the music in the movie but at my showing it was appropriately loud when it needed to be.
Generally, I like the IMAX audio. It's not audiophile quality in terms of pin-point imaging and it seems that intelligibility aspects might be enhanced over neutrality. But wow, it's satisfyingly BIG and the low end is visceral. I thought the club scene was great with New Order's "Blue Monday" pounding away above the ambient and surround noise one might expect in such a venue. Put a big smile on my face. I AM curious what younger audience members thought of this. So much modern pop music seems so bland and uninnovative by comparison.
I did not see it on Imax. I agree that Imax is MUCH better sonically than a garden variety cinema. That very well may have been the difference.
I covered my eyes during some of the kissing scenes, too. Yuck!
Even though he took full directing credit. I didn't care about any of the characters. Oscar Schindler was more heart warming. Ben Mendelsohn did a nice job of being an evil suit but the casting was uninspired.
I was amazed at all the 3D CGI at play. I'm surprised they have 2D screenings. Well, just another adult sleeping pill.
I guess 2D is for the folks waaay out in the boonies who don't have easy access to theaters that show 3D movies. Poor bastards. The whole point of virtual reality is the 3D. Hel-loo!

Despite being a life long science fiction fan I'll pass. I'm sick to death of CGI. And YA movies. And Spielberg.

Also, as we've seen on the news in recent days, tough talking teens are the future, not a bunch of old dudes.
I taught grade 8-9 - girls are talking - one girls says to friend
"my boyfriend tossed my salad last night"
I had to look that up and I'm pretty darn liberal.
Times sure have changed since I was in grade 9. And that was 8 years ago - now it's probably a conversation in grade 6. jeez

The soundtrack was 80s techno pop and rock like Billy Idol and New Order and Prince. Other pop culture references were 80s movies like The Shining and Back to the Future. One assumes 16 year olds today must be pretty hip if they get all those 80s pop culture references.

...are for their parents.
Spielberg is no fool.
He wanted to expand the film's demographics beyond the young movie-goers.
The movie - like the book - is for adults. But also for teens, who are much hipper than adults were at that age.
That CG, as the star in films, making live actors secondary, has about run its course.
I could be wrong of course, but I'm personally weary from it.
I don't think your hopes will be realized. The only thing that other countries movie industries can't duplicate are the special effects. If you want to sell, you need product.
