Follow Ups:
To accuse a director of social engineering and preverting a fictional story with political correctness because he has cast a couple of actors that don't meet your ethnic expectations is ridiculous, and belies some political agenda--or worse--that the reviewer is promoting. Even the director has stated in interviews that his choice of actors was based solely on the actor's abilities. Our reviewer, despite his suspicions about the show, even remarks how good one of the actors is.
I heard that many of the Trojans weren't actually Trojans as well. That seemed to have escaped our reviewer. Many films and stage plays have been done with "experimental casts." I'm not going to dig in the dirt here and make accusations, but "social engineering" has a nasty ring to it in the context of this review.
To tell you the truth my first aversion to the review came
with the writer's adolescent description of the actress who plays Helen. The reviewer is apparently simultaneously attracted by her breasts and repulsed by her nose, leaving him unable to describe anything of her performance.
I get that you're all mostly old, cantankerous fellers who want to keep things simple. Me too. And some of you are having a few yucks over my post. To me it's kinda sad. And this all comes a few days after the same reviewer uses "Frogwarts" in a subject line for a review. Some adult here has to know that that is offensive, don't they?
So, before you tell me I'm too sensitive, or tell me just don't read the review, or tell me it's just a succint review of the reviewer's impression, or tell me the reviewer's doing us all a big favor, think about a first time visitor wandering onto this site and reading that review. What would a young person think? You wonder why audio has a hard time attracting young people...
to fulfill the 'quota' and relieve production of any SJ activists criticism. "Social Engineering" or "Social Construct" call it whatever you want, but it is spreading like a plague - don't you have a kid in college taking Humanities? If you did, you'd know - unless, you don't have an issue with the Postmodernists and the Neo-Marxists.
There's just a lot a fear lately that voodoo is involved. In some cases I see it and hate it. But to continually see it when it just ain't there is excessive...
***think about a first time visitor wandering onto this site and reading that review. What would a young person think?***
I don't know... what would he think? Do I even care?
I don't think anything that gets written here raises to the pompous status of a "review". Impressions, opinions is more like it. And yes - any time you walk into a new bar it makes sense to get to know its regulars. Otherwise how do you know whom to trust? Simply avoiding controversial remarks hardly makes one an interesting writer... or, God forbid a REVIEWER. :)

but continually harping on those controversial remarks is a writer's surest route to the bargain bin and obscurity. Must he drag his readers along with him?
...trying to correct the styles of those who take their time to write here is not the most productive way of improving the forum. I wish more people shared their experiences, then, possibly, the resulting magnitude of opinions and views would naturally eliminate most of concerns.
Unfortunately, it seems that watching films is far less popular today vis-a-vis all that computer and phone junk, and watching good ones is even less so. This forum used to be more active, with sharp disagreements and arguments abound - it is far more docile nowadays. So my hat's off to Wonka for moving the ball forward... even if his style might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Consider him your Uncle Ben, whose silly jokes might bother your sister, but who will be there when her car needs new transmission.

at your affection for him since most of what he reviews is garbage. Moving things forward? I'll have to disagree...But my purpose is not to persecute him personally here on this forum, but rather to seek some relief from the paranoia that creeps into many of his reviews.
I am all for more people stepping forward - instead of getting upset over his posts, why don't you write about what touches you?

But I thought it was racist to not use the correct ethnic person for Asian, American Indian and other racial roles these days.
-Rod
So you're acting as an apologist for the offending reviewer? According to your post you "think" the director is racist for racially miscasting the roles? Did you even read the post of mine you responded to?
Anyway, in my original complaint I didn't mention the word "racist." You brought that up. I don't know if the reviewer is racist or not. My complaint is that he's manufacturing controversy over skin color and blowing it up into a conspiracy of social engineering and political correctness. Add that to his comments about women and the recent slur on the French and it's just ugliness. And that behaviour is constant.
Sorry that I don't have your support. SMH
I like to flatter myself that I have a passing knowledge of classical literature, and, amazingly enough, I've never found even ONE reference to Zeus or Achilles being Nubian! ;-)
OTOH, I do recall one of the Roman emperors (I forget which one now) traveling out to one of the conquered provinces to help dedicate a shrine to one of the local deities, since the Romans were fairly tolerant of other religions. They saw the parallels between their gods and other groups' gods, with the latter having equivalents in the Roman Pantheon. ("Oh yeah - this local god of yours is like our Jupiter.") Of course, this tolerance didn't always extend to Christianity! But I suppose there could have been a local Nubian god who was the equivalent of Zeus/Jupiter! ;-)
My objection isn't to the reviewers displeasure with casting, it's his paranoid fantasy about the reasons for the casting.
It just reads that way to you.
Just because he sounds paranoid doesn't mean Hollywood and the Lefties AREN'T out to get Mr. Wonka.
They are just taking their sweet time.
They can sell more popcorn that way.

Google Alex Jones and social engineering. I've tried to dance around politics here, but apparently everyone here has a tin ear when it comes to identifying rhetorical sources.
didn't happen. That Alex Jones?? Lol. Whatever cred you had just evaporated.

If you would follow the thread, you would understand where the Alex Jones reference fits in. Jesus, people are jumpy around here...

That's why I told you to READ THE THREAD.
for me to read the whole thread. I read your input newbie, such as it was, that was plenty.

I'm thankful he took the hit for the team by watching it so I don't waste my time doing the same.
Willy Bonka is our best reviewer here IMHO. He pulls no punches, calls em as he sees em and, way more often than not, I find my own self agreeing with him.

He deserves it.
