A darker than dark story, with Tyrone Power as the lead.
Good thing about films like that is the fact that they make you look into past, learn more about the actors and their time. Incredibly short were the lives of some of the past stars... Tyrone dead at the age of just 44.
Follow Ups:
And it's the female characters who make this film work. Tyrone Power's character uses and abuses everybody, and the payback makes for a heck of a dramatic payoff. Good carnival movies are rare. La Strada and Freaks come to mind. T.P. was such a big star that he nearly overwhelms the movie with his stagecraft. He's kind of a ham. That said, I love this movie too. Can't wait for Fox to restore and remaster the movie. Great looking Noir.
The Unsuspected with Claude Rains. Cool mystery with the best vintage electronics. Neato

Haven't seen it in a while, the great broadcast of 1938 , or was it 39? Anyway,it had W.C. Fields, in it , and shouldn't be hard to find the correct one.
,The picture has some stage props for broadcasting from a ship, and an early video picture transfer machine, pictured in use, for a bit. The kind that used a rotating disk, but I don't know how accurate the stage machines actually are, I have only read about early TV. There is also a gyrocopter used momentarily.

TCM runs it. Perhaps they stream it. If not they will run it eventually.

We have been debating adding it, but so far negative. Ten bucks here, ten, there...
For now our sources include Netflix (mostly DVD's), Amazon Prime and Youtube.
Most of the time we use that last one to watch old Soviet movies. Yeah, I know... all that propaganda stuff, and yet, there is WEALTH of incredibly good films, not available anywhere else. People managed to fly under the radars. Many world class actors, capable of conveying range of emotions with just the tiniest shades of facial expressions.

He does a radio show so you've got that tech. He has a 16" vinyl cutter. Nice turntable. The director goes out of his way to show electronics.
Oh it's a neat story, Rains kills it.

This 1956 movie with Tyrone Power as Eddy Duchin is very good. The Piano music is great.

...not as much for its artistic merits, mainly due to its look into history.
It immediately spurred some reading. Probably not many know that his wife was ostracized after her marriage - how dared she to marry a Jewish musician?
He died at just 41. Power did credible job "playing" piano, you could easily see it was fake, but still credible, good enough to maintain the mood.

I remember the film. Mainly due to a trip I took to LA with my grandmother. We stayed with one of her good friends who was a retired concert pianist. She took us to meet a distant relative. He lived in a nice smaller home next to Bob Hope's mansion. He played numerous musical instruments and taught actors how to fake playing. He mentions teaching Power for this role.
