I would not put much or any stock in award shows - I like them for a passing amusement but let's face it - much of it is political and folks voting for or against people based not wholly on the talent. I have read those stories where the voters give their ballots to the maid to fill out.
Plus this is a business and if you spread the awards out to the movies no one sees then it gets butts in the seats. More people are going to watch the Glenn Close film "The Wife" which until she won I never heard of - never saw advertised here at all. Maybe my view is cynical but from a financial standpoint it makes a lot of sense to heap praise on under the radar films.
Plus, I have no doubt some politics and petty issues get in the way consciously or subconsciously.
Lady Gaga is a singer not an actress - yes yes she trained as an actress blah blah blah - but people can resent her MASSIVE global star appeal and will choose the professionally trained actor who had to battle for years or even decades to "make it" as an actor/actress. They will also vote for their "friends" over someone they don't know. Add those kinds of people AND the people who, let's be fair, preferred Glenn Close's performance and there you go.
Plus I really liked her performance (more than the film) but we must admit that Gaga, through no fault of her own, is kind of playing a version of herself. With a similar story Arc.
A good singer who can't make it on her looks but is taken seriously by a major star. Great but this is sort of Gaga. She was a singer in nightclubs playing metal and other genres and until she put the crazy clothes on (to hide that she is no Rihanna in the looks department) she hit it big.
I mean it's in the general ballpark of her life. So that sort of gets a strike against her - unfair as it may be - I suspect that is at least part of why she would not get voted. The argument would be she is playing herself and that isn't acting in the same way as performing totally alien to your persona.
Besides what matters generally is what your peers think. If you are a director and you win the director award from the director's guild that to me counts more than what some reviewer or forum poster with no talent thinks regarding the arts. With cars or toasters or audio equipment that's different but Art is subjective.
Plus, there are other political elements at play these days - the actor's public persona - she is LGBTQ supporter and that will automatically lose her votes (and may gain her some) regardless of the performance.
Follow Ups:
I was struck by your line about "I have no doubt politics or petty issues get in the way, consciously or subconsciously" . Ever hear the saying when you point your finger , three point back at you?
I bring up this only because of all the seeming ill will against the movie industry in your post, what's the deal? Did your girl run off with a projectionist?
The few 333333333industry people I come across are hard working, results driven people that often put in crazy hours to get the job done in all kinds of situations.
I wonder if there is the financial incentive for screens in your town to make your complaints about distribution of independent films reasonable. I live in the film industry area, and the movie you speak of had a very limited release, even today , two theaters play the thing, on a second release, same as the first time.
I went to some of the nominated films , crowds were never a problem. At the showing of free solo I attended, I was the only guy there, and that is a very good movie, I wish I had seen it in IMAX. I had to seek out the show houses that feature small films , not at a high overhead mall space.
I certainly don't have the track record to tell a guy how to live, but why not put on a smile and enjoy what the film industry provides. life is too short to make simple public entertainment into a personal problem. no matter how you feel about the quality, a simple entertainment is not that important.
she's yesterday's news... the only people that care about Gaga are her "little monsters"....
Yea, I like it. I'm not a Little MOnster

"E Burres Stigano?"
I think most people write off an artist to some extent as "oh that pop singer" and if you don't like it you tend not to circle back to them.
I mean Lady Gaga is pretty far removed from the artist who most people saw when she first came out.
I don't hate pop music and so I was never put off by her - I liked the song Bad Romance - I consider it a top shelf pop song - Paparazzi was well written and has a fun video - and I like Poker - so Poker Face was fun.
I mean she did Joanne and a duet album with Tony Bennett - not sure people who wrote her off even know these things.
Indeed, I was watching a video by a vocal coach who was rating the vocal talent of female pop stars. Lady Gaga ranked an A - but he ranked Ariana Grande an A. I admit I saw a couple videos - heard the auto tune and wrote her off as one of those manufactured hacks - but no she actually has a pretty excellent voice - considering her age and the genre.
Just a small aside - I was in Vegas over Christmas and on Dec 28th I saw Celine Dion - it's sort of the thing to do in Vegas and this is her final run of shows. I saw Celine 24 years ago at the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver before she was a star. I must admit I was rather stunned that she still had the belting range at the age of 50 - and I am told this is very difficult in the dry climate of Las Vegas.
The next night Celine attended the Lady Gaga (Celine is a big fan apparently) show which MGM has created for Lady Gaga's Enigma Residency. I suppose it's tough to turn down the $70,000,000 contract.
And lastly, the Joanne album has a few tracks recorded analog via master tape. When I say Dianna Krall walking out of my LP store in Nanaimo, British Columbia to the hoots of people in the street - well - any girl into Analog is already aces in my books.
I am not sure that is true - it may be the opposite these days as she has left a lot of that pop fair behind. She has a growing new and different sort of audience. Just seeing a lot of commentary lately like "I always hated Lady Gaga and now I am a fan" or "She should have started out like This (meaning the way she is now) versus the ridiculous way she started out."
Of course the ugly truth in music business is that talent doesn't always win - you can have talent and toil away in a bar for 35 years. I mean Eva Cassidy was superb when she was alive and no one ever heard of her. She dies and gets a little airplay in London and she became a pretty massive star in death.
I kind of defend Lady Gaga because her voice is a major cut above most of the entire rest of the pop singing world and she has ventured and succeeded with jazz and contemporary and even has a little support with the metal heads. Doing an album with Metallica apparently.
The point being though - to become known in the sea of utter crap - you sort of have to do something different. She could toil away in a bar for 25 years and not make it it she can put on some ridiculous dresses and make-up and become the female version of Elton John!
I mean Would Elton have made it without the crazy outfits, hats and eyeglasses? Maybe maybe not.
And now that she is the biggest star on the planet - those crazy outfits are "largely" long gone and she is no longer singing typical pop/dance music. In other words - now she is commanding audiences that go to hear her SING - versus going to concerts to see the shtick.
Unlike most other pop singers - she can get an an audience where she can simply play piano and sing. Alla a Sarah McLachlan where it's not all spectacle and pyrotechnics. Of course Gaga will do that stuff for the base audience too.
She seems to be able to pull off a wide variety of music styles from hard core metal to cheese-ball pop, to rock to jazz. She can look elegant or space alien crazy - I think she is a hoot. You know FUN.
I think she has enough voice to last and is still young and improving. I don't think a Madonna or Rihanna etc can do this for example.
and put a "weird" spin on it. I do disagree with you about Madonna though... She is now in her mid 50's and has sustained a great career and is about to release some new music... We will see what happens. Sir Elton if you remember started out without all the Pomp and Circumstance and THEN morphed into the glasses and crazy outfits. But he has CRAZY talent as a musician AND composer. It ALL copied Bowie who was the original chameleon! Eva Cassidy I DO believe would have reached fame eventually... She WAS doing it her way until fate played a cruel and senseless card. To be fair to Gaga, I have not seen the movie. I probably will at some point. Being a HUGE fan of both Ms. Garland AND Ms. Streisand's, my resistance is that the story has been DONE! Still, I am curious....
And still tactless / abrasive as ever.
GaGa went in for all the costumes and makeup because she odd-looking if not ugly. One thing, GaGa can sing. Best National Anthem, ever.

Sorry.... I think you're wrong about that! Granted there is a pound of makeup.....
but bad surgeries and implants take more than a pound.
Looking at photos of her through the years (which I hesitate to admit), you can see that she has had subtle periodic changes for the better. Now sporting a much less chiseled-looking face, due to skillful chiseling. IMO.
The ass growth is padding, I suspect. That much mass leveraged out would thrown off movements of any kind. And she is consistent with health and workout regimes that rival Olympic athletes. Of course, she's also a whack job, so I could be wrong.
Ol' Madge is known for going outrageous to draw attention. Lifestyle, sex habits, porno dance moves, abrasive comments, etc etc. It's the well-tested shock and awe treatment.
I can't imagine fans of Madonna not liking Gaga to be honest - Every pop act is pretty much going to copy in some form what came before - and that applies to all genres of music from Rock to pop to classical to jazz. Gaga is simply a much better vocal talent than most and perhaps all current pop singers. And she is a classically trained vocalist, pianist and can play guitar - and she writes her own songs.
I guess I never quite understood the major hate on for Lady Gaga because every interview I have seen she's been pretty sweet - she's good to her fans. I mean you can't really say that about a lot of artists - even Madonna who can be quite - shall we say nicely - tactless.
And even some of Gaga's nutty clothes were making at least some attempt at symbolism - even the "piece of meat" dress as commentary on the entire pop music genre and on Fame.
Lady Gaga is Godmother to Elton John's sons and the two are very close in real life. Elton is apparently preparing to do a final 3 year tour. I suspect Gaga will be in there as a guest. Anyway - I think she's a sweet kid.
She's a sweet girl - just don't get the hate for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylqQCwvC6Bw
This is for Elton

tits! NOT a good thing, for a girl her age.... Madonna has ALWAYS had a nice pair and has kept in great shape...
you definitely would be bummed about my scrotum.
I would try to tone it up, but it has no muscles to work with.
I defend all tits, well, those still above the waist.

...Madonna is a brilliant self-promoter.
Gaga is too but championed girls and women who are different, maybe feeling outcast, and urged them to embrace their differentness.
An inclusive message that many younger women need to hear.

Like Stereophile's RCL, you still want to know what comes out on top if you're an audiophile.
Same with film awards except the Oscars, as flawed as they are, is the RCL of films for the year.
Your favorite or even the best doesn't always win but you have to pay attention.
Eesh I would put far more faith in the Globes than the RCL - lol.
