I just converted from Comcast cable to Verizon Fios. I'm running an HDMI cable from the cable box to the TV. When I flip to HD stations, something wierd happens to the picture.
Sometimes it's okay and sometimes either the picture is shifted 1/3 of the way right to I see the left 2/3rds of the picture and the right 1/3 of the screen is blank, or the picture is centered but the green box with the station info is shifted to the right and is jittery.
When I turn the TV off and on again, with the cable box left on an HD station, the picture comes in perfect. I can then switch from HD station to HD station with no problem.
I would guess that some of the screen coordinates are getting mucked up some how and the TV is misinterpreting some of the digital information. I heard that the HDMI standard is still evolving. I wonder if there's an incompatibility between the box and the TV.
The off/on is an easy workaround but it would be nice if there's a permanent solution.
Follow Ups:
If you turn the TV of then back on again, then it may be a handshake problem. I'm not an ecpert, but I've heard some of the STBs are basically dog doo. Have you contacted verizon?
As a side note, do you need a STB if you have a digital tuner? Verizon's FIOS will eventually come to my area, but I don't want a STB.

Is STB a TLA for "Set Top Box"? Yes, I have a cable box.
I don't want the clutter of a STB, nor the signal degridation. Pitty. I was hoping they could just take the coaxal straight to my set and let it's tuner do the work. Perhaps they can use a cablecard-Comcast couldn't get them to work for me. Or, I won't use them at all. We'll see.

We have Brighthouse HD cable with a Scientific Atlanta HD box
and experience the same problems.
We had it with Cablevision when we were in NY also.
NBC is the worst offender when it comes to reliable picture
with HD. Many times we have to watch NBC in SD because NBC
is not broadcasting their HD signal correctly.
Maybe in 10 years they'll have this sorted out.
But I wouldn't hold my breath.

In Louisville, the NBC affiliate has the worst HD performance compared to the other local stations. The station management doesn't seem too motivated to get it right because they view it as a cost item only with no revenue generation. I use to complain regularly but to no avail. I get all HD locals OTA because they are not yet carried by DirecTv.
Makes a difference!

Atlanta Scientific STB's both places.
As many as 4 different AS box's. (Moving to many times)
The channel with the poorest performance has always been NBC.

I assume their aware of the problems but don't have any fix yet.
Maybe never.

Dishnetwork had the best broadcast HD package I could get last time I checked. I don't know if anyone's one-upped them yet, but if someone had, I'd guess it would be DirecTV.
When I'm in channel surfing mode, I look at the HD channels first, then decide if I want to put up with ugly SD broadcasts to fill the big screen (the programming would have to be something I was really liked).
Hi there
Your problems with HD are more complicated because you're getting the signal from a third party, the cable company. Over the Air HDTV signals directly from the broadcaster do not seem to have that many problems (assuming you can get OTA reception). The most irritating has been no center-channel audio (resulting in no dialog!), but things have been good lately.
