The source was an anonymous "tipster."
I agree with Jack G - this week was FUD week from the Blu Ray camp.
Follow Ups:
The only anonymous tipster info was "they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days..". BUT NOT THE "FACT" THAT BLOCKBUSTER is going Blu-Ray. That is not sourced, but stated as a fact.
.
BD was supposed to stomp out HD DVD by last christmas. Unfortunately for Sony, they didn't sell as many PS3s as planned. People aren't flocking to the $1000 stand alone players either. Attatch rates are a joke, and the Pirates movies that were supposed to kill HD DVD, only sold tens of thousands. They STILL haven't finalized the specs. To top it all off, for some reason HD DVD won't roll over and die. There's rumors that Fox will be releasing in France, but region coding kind of puts a damper on importing them.

PS. 2 days ago, Panasonic announced BD had won the war. I beleive this is the third time this year they've won.
Yes, I read the article. I don't personally give the story a lot credibility, BUT it does serve as yet another indicator that the scales are indeed tipping. Hearsay, buzz, word-of-mouth... whatever you call it does not diminish the impact it has on consumers.
A lot of people want this technology for their homes once they see HD in action. The only thing stopping them from buying is the confusion of two competing formats... well, and price. And price is HD-DVD's only remaining advantage.
I hope it's over soon!
Spreading myths and lies. Its what Sony specializes in. Remember their fake movie reviewer?

I guess it's possible. Viral marketing (sounds so sinister!)...They all wish they could do it as well as Sony does!
I think another part of the equation that is being overlooked is the fact that Sony still has some of the brand cachet that they built up in the 80s... I personally think that their higher tier products are pretty nice.
I bought a 26 inch Bravia LCD and Samsung 1080P7 DVD player for bedroom movie watching. Memorial Day weekend sale at Magnolia... The Bravia is a very nice product! Excellent PQ with the Sammy upscaling to 720p over HDMI. Still tweaking on it, but I'm very impressed. It also has the best sound from small "TV speakers" that I've heard.
I'm getting off-topic here... all I'm trying to say is that Sony is still capable of bringing great products to market.
Cheers
But there has been a *coordinated* effort to blow this way out of poportion. Its pretty much all thats been discussed at various online, forums chat rooms etc..
