It had been rumored by the gaming press, then denied by Sony, and now it looks like the $100 price cuts are real, and will be effective on the 12th of July as originally anticipated. That brings the entry level price of the PS/3 to $500, same as the price of the discontinued 20 gigabyte model.Quote:
Since it began selling the PS3 last November, Sony has been criticized for setting the price higher than the competition and including expensive features that most consumers were not ready to use, like a Blu-ray high-definition DVD drive.

Besides the $100 price drop, there's also a "5 free movies" deal going on with the purchase of any Blu-ray player.Read the linked thread below to see how someone got a PS3 for $450 + tax from BestBuy through their "price-matching" policy. How long this lasts is anybody's guess...
Sony to slash PlayStation3 price
Eight months after its introduction, with sales trailing its rivals', the game box will be sold for $499, a $100 drop.
By Alex Pham, Times Staff Writer
The PlayStation 3 plays video games and high-definition movies. Now Sony Corp. wants the game console to play better with consumers' wallets.
The Japanese consumer electronics giant plans to announce today that it will knock $100 off the price of the PlayStation 3 in an effort to jump-start sluggish sales. The price drop, to $499 from $599, comes eight months after Sony started selling the console.
The price cut could help Sony recover from the uncharacteristically slow start of its PS3.
After dominating with its first two PlayStation systems, the PS3 is lagging behind Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii as the next-generation console of choice.
Analysts say that's in large part because Sony's console has a built-in high-definition DVD player and therefore costs more than rival systems.
"From a pocketbook standpoint, we know we've presented a challenge for consumers," said Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, which manages the U.S. PlayStation unit.
Even though, last week they announced there would be no price cut. So, once again they are trying to undercut the standalones with a toy, a heavily subsidized one at that. No wonder Samsung is putting out a dual player.

EDIT: I doubt it will make that much of a difference. Most people that really wanted the PS3 already have one. Remember, the 20G version sold for $500. Those that want a $500 BD player can get the Sony BD-300 or the Samsung BDP-1200.
Oh so tempting if I trade in my Playstation 2 and a bunch of games I'll never play again, I could net the PS/3 + 5 B-D movies for around $400 which is comparable to the price of my Toshiba HD DVD player. But $400 is still real money!
I assume you would get a 30 day guarantee. If it isn't working out for you, return it.
Go for it if thats what you want. I'm not a gamer, and don't want a console. There are other players for the same price. The question is, will you watch the movies? I'm generally not a fan of most blockbusters, though my wife likes some. I picked up the G2 Samsung, and have 4 titles coming from Amazon. I don't foresee a whole lot of BD purchases for me, but there may be a few catalog titles I'll pick up here and there. Most of my purchases will still be HD DVD, I just prefer their titles.
enjoy,
Jack
I'm still mulling this over, and I'll admit that at the moment, there are really no PS/3 games that seem particularly interesting, and of Blu-Ray exclusive movies, most seem like the sorts I'd rather rent than purchase. I guess I have several weeks to decide before the free movie offer expires.
The 5 freebies had no effect on my decision to buy. I haven't filled out the form yet, and I suspect I won't watch any of them for a long time-some maybe never.
