All electronics that do processing functions these days can benefit from firmware and software updates and the approach to that is to connect the device to your network and download current firmware. The PS3 and other blu-ray players don't need new hardware, just new firmware and software to take full advantage of BD. But all devices should do this, PCs being a prime example and TiVos being another.

Most BD players don't have the hardware to process two video streams. I'm not sure about the PS3, but none of the other players are upgradable to do PiP. they cannot be made to be compliant with profile 1.1.

What we're really talking about here is BD-J.
Here are just some of the players that currently support BD-J:
Sony BDP-S1
Sony BDP-S300
Samsung BDP-1000
Samsung BDP-1200
Samsung BDP-1400
Panasonic DMP-BD10
Pioneer BDP-HD1
LG BH100 combo Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD player
Philips BDP-9000
Sony Playstation 3

Do your homework.
Right now, all players have a profile of 1.0
You are confusing BD-J with video profiles.

Edit: I forgot that the Denons are 1.1 compliant, but they aren't out yet.
.
HD comes with picture in picture now in all its units? NO?
Yes, HD-DVD has that feature. Would you ever use it? I doubt I would.

The LG combo player doesn't have this ability. but it also doesn't have the HD DVD logo on it.
Perhaps you shouldn't have sold your A20.

has only one studio left that is solely HD?
None of the majors has changed, but there are about the same number of titles availabnle to both formats.
