Apple doesn't always take the more predictable routes: Rather than promoting home theater computers, for intance, they came out with AppleTV.

Meanwhile, it's not obvious to me what "wow" factor would be enhanced simply by cramming a Blu-Ray drive into an iMac: Is 1080p going to look so much better on a 20-24" screen that people will pay an extra $500? I think the cost/perceived-benefit thing isn't terrific yet. Mac Pro towers have dual bays for optical drives, and Blu-Ray as a build-to-order item would make some sense, though the current lack of HDMI on Apple's video cards and monitors would mean the darned things wouldn't actually play off-the-shelf movies.

The wow factor is that you can fit 50 GB worth of data on a blu-ray disc and you can author HDTV blu-ray home videos shot with a blu-ray camcorder. I agree that you don't reap the benefits of HDTV on a small iMac screen, but it's important to bring PC capabilities up to date for authoring home movies that you can watch on your blu-ray player and big-screen HDTV.

    Not to mention there have been issues with home made BDs playing on some BD players. Lack of standardization can be a bitch.

    ...and honestly I'm not even sure they will have blu-ray drives standard. My neighbor works at Apple as an engineer on the iMac team (actually, he was just pulled off to work on a new iPhone), but he can't tell me what's coming before Apple announces it. He can get me good deals, though.
