Why is it that sometimes, a defective disk, a dirty disk completely locks up the machine. Why is it that these video disk players can't recover from a flawed portion of the disk? Sure, it might skip and jump but in most cases it just freezes up. The only way to recover is to unplug the machine and start over. Frankly, at that point I've lost interest in what I was watching and eject the disk ant turn it off. Why bother with any of it???????

I own the toshiba a2 and the sony bdp1. the sony is a bit slow to respond to the remote but is an excellent up converting dvd player and is by far the best sounding dvd player i have ever owned (last was pioneer elite 79) and btw the sony cost LESS than the pioneer. The sony just blows its doors off. The toshiba is just average as a dvd player but what do you expect at this price point? You can pick both up for less that $1000. So where is the beef? Why all this complaining and discussion about the different formats? I am very pleased with both players and could just care less about which format wins loses or shows. Many formats have died over the years. Just run down to best lie and plunk down the ole worn out plastic, kick back and enjoy! Both players and both formats are much better than the average dvd.
How are you outputting the audio? What equipment and which audio tracks are you utilizing? TIA!
Running the analog out thru nordost into pre. I use the uncompressed audio when option is available. Equipment EC 4.7 pre and Classe Cam 200 monoblocks and of course Maggies 3.5r (hence the name panhead - ha ha )
...Without any specifics it is hard to understand the purpose of the post?
Do you want some help or advice or you just felt like having a whinge?

I have had bad players that freeze up. It seems the better players have software that recognises what type of problem there is and deals with it appropriatly ( like skiping over the bad area for the shortest time necessary and plays again).

.
I'll admit I should have said that in my post. I blurted that one out. Though in a bit of a defence , some players have better algorithms for detecting disc errors.

I have zero experience with DVD HD or Blu-Ray, either one, but the trouble you're having sounds like something that used to happen to me a lot before I switched to my current DVD player. If my experience is any indicator, it turns out that the player has a lot more to do with tracking and error-handling than the disc.
Wow, then DVD must be a failure. I have recently received 2 DVD's from netflix that lock up my DVD player. You have convinced me to go back to VHS.
Blu Ray and HD DVD technologies are still in the beginning stages of their life cycles, and even the latest players are only 2nd generation. Standard technology/product life cycle curve dictates that the technology and products are not yet stable. If the offerings are successful, they will eventually reach a plateau of stability. At this point, buying into either of these technologies brands you as an Early Adopter. If you choose to be an Early Adopter, you will deal with incompatibilities, reliability issues, limited availability, higher prices, rapid churn in features/functions, and rapid obsolescence of products as new versions come out. If you're not comfortable dealing with these frustrations, being an Early Adopter is not for you.
...I have not had one problem with any DVD or Blu-ray in the 6 months I've owned the PS3.

Maybe with an SACD player. For a while, I was going through the disc cleaning ritual. Don't remember having that problem with HD DVD or Blu-Ray. I've heard HD DVD has had problems with rental discs. Something about HD DVDs being too easy to scratch up. Kiss of death for rentals.
My friend had only experienced what you described one time so far on the PS3. Yes, it is a PITA when it occurs but now he is basically cleaning each and every disc before he starts playback since he is primarily only doing rentals. No problem since even with the one disc that failed.
I'm not going to say people aren't going to have a problem with software from time to time and I understand your point because his player did not recover and just froze also. However, not all SD DVD players always resolve a problem with software either and lockup occurs also. Same with CD players on occasion.
If it is continually happening though, dump the player, not the format! :)
I think I had to dust or wipe down one disk before it worked 100%, but no other problems to speak of. But the disks that I'm getting look almost pristine, so that may have lots to do with it.
Unless there were some very very careless 1 or 2 folks that got it before you did, I would except discs in excellent condition.
There just aren't enough folks that bought in yet to have these discs to be in bad shape is my reasoning. My local Blockbuster has only a few people who have rented them since they got them in! My friend never has a wait in his netflix queue and hasn't had any big problems. He inspects them and cleans them. Perhaps there is more volume through netflix but I wouldn't expects lots if there is no wait!
2 Planet discs from Netflix failed due to being recognized as Region 2. 3 discs had the water strip running down the left edge of the player. One from Netflix just locked up and would not play. THESE are not necessarily the fault of the player or disc. But in the end , who cares, Disc don't play.
Much less problems for HD DVD. None since the FW upgrades.
Jack
sorry about that.
Someone else has probably used that disc before you and probably has not been as careful with (rental) discs as one should be. And someone sending you the wrong region coded disk suggests something about the rental company.
The hard coating is a plus for BD.
Jack
Except that one I mentioned. I wouldn't be going near this format at this point if he consistently had issues as rental will be my chief resource for discs also. Too expensive to buy software at this point for me. I see prices coming down though for the holidays in my opinion.
