2 Planet discs from Netflix failed due to being recognized as Region 2. 3 discs had the water strip running down the left edge of the player. One from Netflix just locked up and would not play. THESE are not necessarily the fault of the player or disc. But in the end , who cares, Disc don't play.

Much less problems for HD DVD. None since the FW upgrades.

Someone else has probably used that disc before you and probably has not been as careful with (rental) discs as one should be. And someone sending you the wrong region coded disk suggests something about the rental company.
The hard coating is a plus for BD.

Except that one I mentioned. I wouldn't be going near this format at this point if he consistently had issues as rental will be my chief resource for discs also. Too expensive to buy software at this point for me. I see prices coming down though for the holidays in my opinion.
