But for $100, the HD-A2 is a pretty darn good deal. First piece of paper I pulled out were instructions suggesting I do an immediate firmware update. I actually jury-rigged an internet connection to download the firmware. Not sure I was doing it right, the composite video feed fine print instructions were mostly unreadable. I must have done something right because it finished the "update attempt" and I was able to play the "Transformers" IME/PIP feature. I guess some people might think the interactivity was cool but I think I'll stick to watching the movie "straight up".
I have to admit the HD-A2 display of "Transformers" was very good; the surround mix was very good but the LFE was still not at "earthquake levels" when I was expecting it to be (I think this is a common complaint with a lot of "Transformers" owners). I'm stuck with using the optical output from this player so all I'm getting is DDplus converted to DTS.
The Manufacture date is August 2007 which seems "uncomfortably recent" for those who think this is a close-out sale....

I might even return one (1) when/if I decide HD DVD is doomed to failure; though this decision needs to take place fairly quickly...

And it even if it does, I might have to use two different addresses to get 10 movies. Fortunately I got two difference receipts. Unfortunately, I forgot I don't know anyone in the family with an HDTV yet so giving it away as Christmas present could be problematical.

If I didn't have this thing for lossless audio and almost perfect video, there would be a lot of Warner and Universal HD DVDs I might take a look at. As it is, I'm holding out for remastered Blu-ray versions which may never appear...
"Transformers" had the best video I've seen on HD DVD but other than the special effects, the movie really sucks. The audio could have been better despite the "perfect" (?) scores it's gotten from some reviewers.
I'm not given much of choice on which 5/10 movies to pick up but free is free.
Transformers was the best video you've seen on HD DVD? It was good, but I didn't think it was that good. Horrid movie. I can think of a few that were as good or better-Matrix Revolutions, Black Snake Moan, Corpse Bride, Chronicles of Riddick to name a few off the top of my head. I was actually kind of disappointed with Transformers. Crappy movie, and I would not put it in my top 5 for best picture.

I'm holding out for the Blu-ray version of Matrix. "Chronicles of Riddick" would be a doubledip not high on the priority list. None of the others interested me. I don't have a ton of HD DVD movies, most of which are weaker than "Transformers". "King Kong" is widely considered "reference" but I disagree with it's PQ ratings. Or maybe I prefer AVC over VC1 encodes ? "Transformers" impressed me visually more than I want to admit, but I agree it's otherwise a poor movie.
Blu-ray has several movies which I thought had better PQ.

Now I have to go get a DVD-R/W thingee so I can dump it to disc and try it out, though I've never, ever burned a disc before (hard to believe, huh ?!)...
I'll probably pick up "Ratouille" on Blu-ray while I'm at it.
I tried the default disk utility - no go, wouldn't even go near the .iso files. Then downloaded "Dragon Burn" software which was "successful" (?) in copying what appeared to be a .iso file to disk. The LG rejected both discs I tried.
I'm going to punt and ask LG to mail me a disk while I consult with some computer gurus....
That pretty much mirrors my experience with Blu-Ray. Outside of Corpse Bride (which was a freebie) and Fifth Element, I don't have any of the highly rated BD titles. Most in my collection are mediocre. I do like AVC-its at least as good as VC-1, possibly better(?).
