I may as well have been searching for rocking horse shit.
Follow Ups:
The A2 is in stock at Walmart's site for $199. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5723662#
But for $100, the HD-A2 is a pretty darn good deal. First piece of paper I pulled out were instructions suggesting I do an immediate firmware update. I actually jury-rigged an internet connection to download the firmware. Not sure I was doing it right, the composite video feed fine print instructions were mostly unreadable. I must have done something right because it finished the "update attempt" and I was able to play the "Transformers" IME/PIP feature. I guess some people might think the interactivity was cool but I think I'll stick to watching the movie "straight up".
I have to admit the HD-A2 display of "Transformers" was very good; the surround mix was very good but the LFE was still not at "earthquake levels" when I was expecting it to be (I think this is a common complaint with a lot of "Transformers" owners). I'm stuck with using the optical output from this player so all I'm getting is DDplus converted to DTS.
The Manufacture date is August 2007 which seems "uncomfortably recent" for those who think this is a close-out sale....
.
I might even return one (1) when/if I decide HD DVD is doomed to failure; though this decision needs to take place fairly quickly...
.
(quote) "Toshiba is still offering five free HD-DVDs on HD-DVD player purchases through February 28, 2008 and the $98 player qualifies."Heck, you ought to be able to get 5 free HD-DVDs for each player, unless there's a designated one offer to a customer rule; of course, the choices are somewhat limited, but what the heck, they're free! Wow, it's sort of like getting the players for free when you add up the value of the free HD-DVDs in the offer! :o)
AuPh
And it even if it does, I might have to use two different addresses to get 10 movies. Fortunately I got two difference receipts. Unfortunately, I forgot I don't know anyone in the family with an HDTV yet so giving it away as Christmas present could be problematical.
..
If I didn't have this thing for lossless audio and almost perfect video, there would be a lot of Warner and Universal HD DVDs I might take a look at. As it is, I'm holding out for remastered Blu-ray versions which may never appear...
"Transformers" had the best video I've seen on HD DVD but other than the special effects, the movie really sucks. The audio could have been better despite the "perfect" (?) scores it's gotten from some reviewers.
I'm not given much of choice on which 5/10 movies to pick up but free is free.
Transformers was the best video you've seen on HD DVD? It was good, but I didn't think it was that good. Horrid movie. I can think of a few that were as good or better-Matrix Revolutions, Black Snake Moan, Corpse Bride, Chronicles of Riddick to name a few off the top of my head. I was actually kind of disappointed with Transformers. Crappy movie, and I would not put it in my top 5 for best picture.
Jack
I'm holding out for the Blu-ray version of Matrix. "Chronicles of Riddick" would be a doubledip not high on the priority list. None of the others interested me. I don't have a ton of HD DVD movies, most of which are weaker than "Transformers". "King Kong" is widely considered "reference" but I disagree with it's PQ ratings. Or maybe I prefer AVC over VC1 encodes ? "Transformers" impressed me visually more than I want to admit, but I agree it's otherwise a poor movie.
Blu-ray has several movies which I thought had better PQ.
.
Now I have to go get a DVD-R/W thingee so I can dump it to disc and try it out, though I've never, ever burned a disc before (hard to believe, huh ?!)...
I'll probably pick up "Ratouille" on Blu-ray while I'm at it.
I tried the default disk utility - no go, wouldn't even go near the .iso files. Then downloaded "Dragon Burn" software which was "successful" (?) in copying what appeared to be a .iso file to disk. The LG rejected both discs I tried.
I'm going to punt and ask LG to mail me a disk while I consult with some computer gurus....
That pretty much mirrors my experience with Blu-Ray. Outside of Corpse Bride (which was a freebie) and Fifth Element, I don't have any of the highly rated BD titles. Most in my collection are mediocre. I do like AVC-its at least as good as VC-1, possibly better(?).

Did same..nothing at my Wal Mart either.
Toshiba HD may be dead but units sure got snapped up, apparently.
$100 player must be the price point for HD
sold 12 HD-02s we get 37,000 players in one day. I do not know if that's enough to garner a studio's attention.
I don't know how many they've got but at least one of the HD-A2s I bought has a August 2007 manufacture date which suggests to me this is more than a Toshiba firesale.
The ad said a minimum of 10 players in the stores. There have been several reports that some of the larger stores had 50 or so (I don't know how accurate they are though). Since yours was dated August, I'm guessing that they made a big batch, of unknown size, just for Wally World. Hell, if they can sell 50K or so in one day, that will make a big difference, if nothing else, then just to show price counts. The repercussions are already happening involving the price of the A3. Not to mention the average attach rate is about 4 for HD DVD players. I'm sure Sony execs have stocked up on Pampers over the weekend. :-)

SONY will sell from 8 to 11 million PS3 worldwide in this financial year.
With USD 400 for a revised PS3 this seems possible.
So maybe 50.000 Toshiba players sold in USA at a loss matter little.
The real question is will Blu Ray replace DVD?
> > > SONY will sell from 8 to 11 million PS3 worldwide in this financial year. < < <
Not likely. They promised 6 million by xmas last year. They've only sold about 3 million so far, and remember-only about 20% are actually used as a BD player. Even at a serious loss, they aren't selling worth a damn.
> > > The real question is will Blu Ray replace DVD? < < <
No. The BDA can't even get their discs to play on all players, how are they going to compete against DVD? A game console? $400?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Jack
SONY have sold far more than 3 million PS3 worldwide.
20% of 8 mllion is 1.6 million, so 256,000 Toshiba players matter little.
The HD DVD is a failure in Japan, and most of the world.
In USA HD DVD have about 1/3 of the market for movies.
So if a miracle happened, and HD DVD movies began selling better in USA, remember USA is only about 25% of the world market for Japans electronics.
So HD DVD movies have a very small share of the world market, and you cannot change that.
the PS3 has only sold 5,509,915 world wide as of 11/5/07.
The rest of your arguments don't hold much water either.
Enjoy,
Jack
> > > 256,000 Toshiba players matter little. < < <
You forgot the Xbox add on, which brings the numbers to about 500,000.
> > > The HD DVD is a failure in Japan, and most of the world. < < <
Japan is BD because the recorders are real big there. That is a given.
As a point of interest:
Globally, the US has 60% of the HDTV market, Japan has 20%, Europe has 10% the rest have 10%.
> > > In USA HD DVD have about 1/3 of the market for movies. < < <
Not true. You're going to have to let go of that 2:1 security blanket you are clinging to. Since inception to the end of Q3, the numbers are approx. 3M:2M discs sold. You can see how well of those PS3s have been at selling movies.
> > > So if a miracle happened, and HD DVD movies began selling better in USA, remember USA is only about 25% of the world market for Japans electronics.

Again, we aren't interested in all of Japan's electronics. Just HDTVs, and HD players. There's a reason why all of these companies have targeted the US market. Can you guess what it is?
Jack
Europe is a bigger market that USA. More people, more money. Have you not noticed the drop of USD dollar versus EURO and other currencies?
HDTV is a big seller in Europe too. USA does not take 60%.
So far you were WAY off on your PS3 numbers.
Jack
where is your documentation on PS3?
On Europe versus USA see link from CIA. Note that USD have dropped a lot since 2006.
- https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2001rank.html (Open in New Window)
Show me where that gives us the number of HDTVs, because I must have missed it. The truth of the matter is, if either format fails to make it in the US, it (or they) will be considered a failure, or a niche product at best.As for the PS3 numbers, check this link-1/2 way down the page, is a chart giving weekly and total (annual?) numbers it says 2,324,092.
enjoy,
Jack
I wrote about worldwide sales in SONYs financial year (ends spring 2008)
Current numbers in your own link are:
Japan PS3 1,349,072 units until now
USA PS3 2.324.092 units until now
Europe/other PS3 2,078.340 units until now. Here sales started spring 2007 due to lack of units.
Total 5,751,504 units until now.
Current weekly sales are 199,430 units worldwide. That is 10 million per year, and we have to add the Christmas sales boost.
So SONYs target of 8 to 11 million units looks OK.
USA does not matter that much anymore. USA has less than 20% of the world economy, and that share keeps on dropping. You are living in the past.
HDTVs are expensive, so sales are related to GDP.
In Denmark I can only find HDTVs in shops, except of a few 14".
Your 10% for Europe and 60% for USA are very old numbers.
The question is can they sustain low cost volume sales of A2s and now A3s ?
And what is the unit cost of the A2s ? Did Wal-Mart really pay Toshiba $189 for each A2 (as hinted by pricing in States which outlaw product dumping) ? If so, even $200 seems unsustainable.
They sold between 50K and 100K in a weekend, that's no small feat. That shows there IS demand, if the price is right. It also shows that it can compete with DVD players. It also generated alot of interest in HD DVD.> > > The question is can they sustain low cost volume sales of A2s and now A3s ? < < <
I don't see why not, the A3s are supposedly cheaper to make than the A2s. Note that BB dropped the price of the A3 (but doesn't have them in stock). I fully expect the A3 to sell for <$200 this holiday season. That's been the goal all along. Hell, they only list for $300. You are just used to BD's excessive prices.
Jack
LADY "Give me a pound of chicken salad"
DELI GUY: OK Mam, that will be $9.99"
LADY "$9.99 a pound for chicken salad? Forget it, it's $4.99 at the deli down the street"
DELI GUY "Then lady, why don't you go buy it down the street?"
LADY "Because they are sold out!"
DELI GUY "Oh, sorry, excuse me lady, we only charge $2.99 a pound when we are sold out".
So much for the Wally World 2 million units. They sold out with less than 40M (or thereabouts)
Did you try this?
Jack
?
Walmart.com and Blu-ray is offered with a refErence to hd, BUT NO hd ITSELF. E
