I don't know how many they've got but at least one of the HD-A2s I bought has a August 2007 manufacture date which suggests to me this is more than a Toshiba firesale.

The ad said a minimum of 10 players in the stores. There have been several reports that some of the larger stores had 50 or so (I don't know how accurate they are though). Since yours was dated August, I'm guessing that they made a big batch, of unknown size, just for Wally World. Hell, if they can sell 50K or so in one day, that will make a big difference, if nothing else, then just to show price counts. The repercussions are already happening involving the price of the A3. Not to mention the average attach rate is about 4 for HD DVD players. I'm sure Sony execs have stocked up on Pampers over the weekend. :-)

SONY will sell from 8 to 11 million PS3 worldwide in this financial year.
With USD 400 for a revised PS3 this seems possible.
So maybe 50.000 Toshiba players sold in USA at a loss matter little.
The real question is will Blu Ray replace DVD?

Not likely. They promised 6 million by xmas last year. They've only sold about 3 million so far, and remember-only about 20% are actually used as a BD player. Even at a serious loss, they aren't selling worth a damn.

No. The BDA can't even get their discs to play on all players, how are they going to compete against DVD? A game console? $400?

SONY have sold far more than 3 million PS3 worldwide.
20% of 8 mllion is 1.6 million, so 256,000 Toshiba players matter little.
The HD DVD is a failure in Japan, and most of the world.
In USA HD DVD have about 1/3 of the market for movies.
So if a miracle happened, and HD DVD movies began selling better in USA, remember USA is only about 25% of the world market for Japans electronics.
So HD DVD movies have a very small share of the world market, and you cannot change that.
the PS3 has only sold 5,509,915 world wide as of 11/5/07.
The rest of your arguments don't hold much water either.

You forgot the Xbox add on, which brings the numbers to about 500,000.

Japan is BD because the recorders are real big there. That is a given.
As a point of interest:
Globally, the US has 60% of the HDTV market, Japan has 20%, Europe has 10% the rest have 10%.

Not true. You're going to have to let go of that 2:1 security blanket you are clinging to. Since inception to the end of Q3, the numbers are approx. 3M:2M discs sold. You can see how well of those PS3s have been at selling movies.

Again, we aren't interested in all of Japan's electronics. Just HDTVs, and HD players. There's a reason why all of these companies have targeted the US market. Can you guess what it is?

Europe is a bigger market that USA. More people, more money. Have you not noticed the drop of USD dollar versus EURO and other currencies?
HDTV is a big seller in Europe too. USA does not take 60%.
So far you were WAY off on your PS3 numbers.

Show me where that gives us the number of HDTVs, because I must have missed it. The truth of the matter is, if either format fails to make it in the US, it (or they) will be considered a failure, or a niche product at best.As for the PS3 numbers, check this link-1/2 way down the page, is a chart giving weekly and total (annual?) numbers it says 2,324,092.

I wrote about worldwide sales in SONYs financial year (ends spring 2008)
Current numbers in your own link are:
Japan PS3 1,349,072 units until now
USA PS3 2.324.092 units until now
Europe/other PS3 2,078.340 units until now. Here sales started spring 2007 due to lack of units.
Total 5,751,504 units until now.
Current weekly sales are 199,430 units worldwide. That is 10 million per year, and we have to add the Christmas sales boost.
So SONYs target of 8 to 11 million units looks OK.
USA does not matter that much anymore. USA has less than 20% of the world economy, and that share keeps on dropping. You are living in the past.
HDTVs are expensive, so sales are related to GDP.
In Denmark I can only find HDTVs in shops, except of a few 14".
Your 10% for Europe and 60% for USA are very old numbers.
The question is can they sustain low cost volume sales of A2s and now A3s ?
And what is the unit cost of the A2s ? Did Wal-Mart really pay Toshiba $189 for each A2 (as hinted by pricing in States which outlaw product dumping) ? If so, even $200 seems unsustainable.
They sold between 50K and 100K in a weekend, that's no small feat. That shows there IS demand, if the price is right. It also shows that it can compete with DVD players. I don't see why not, the A3s are supposedly cheaper to make than the A2s. Note that BB dropped the price of the A3 (but doesn't have them in stock). I fully expect the A3 to sell for <$200 this holiday season. That's been the goal all along. Hell, they only list for $300. You are just used to BD's excessive prices.

So much for the Wally World 2 million units. They sold out with less than 40M (or thereabouts)
