At the end cap there was Sony player, 27"(?) LCD running Blu-ray promotion with movie clips of various. Boy was I stunned and mesmerized by the definition and crispness not only the cartoons but regular movies. I have a 42" 720p plasma, regular DVD, regular RCA cable for a while, and would not hesitate springing for 1080i, hi-def player, HDMI whatever to achieve that realism. Especially on upcoming Thanksgiving or Christmas. I wonder if HD-DVD has made the same impression on others (I have not visited Bestbuy or others that may have demos of such). One of Blu-ray player list $699?!
Follow Ups:
Like you all have brought up, for casual enthusiasts, availability/exposure, the type of software/titles, and price are the determining points. Sony has its presence via own PS3. HD-DVD a consortium with mfg and the Paramounts.
I see ads already for regular DVD players that upconverts to 1080. Same time all TV's keeping their price points by going to 1080. Over the air analog transmission to discontinue by mandate. Will next gen disc be able to pull it off or face current status of SACD/DVD-A's due to the younger crowd getting their music online and the ever increasing of online bandwith? Or launching such was a decision made to encounter such threat already posed to the music industry.
Still, flat panel TV and hi-def stream has that magic that is really satisfying for a videophile righ now.
A PS3 continually running a BD. Any exposure to the format couldn't hurt though I doubt many Joes have a display to take advantage of the advanced resolution.
The store also has 200+ BDs. Not too shabby considering many others have far less.
As far as my local Targets, far and away more BDs than HD DVDs but there are only about 100 in total across formats. No kiosks as of yet, at least not since the last time I was in either store.
I am tickled blue with my choice of a Samsung BDP1400 blu-ray player and a Samsung 4681 LCD tv. Many retailers have the 1400 priced at $399.While I realize the 1400 has its detractors I personally I haven't haven't found anything it can't read(believe me I've tried).
For me, the choice was easy: Blu-ray has more films that I want to see in hi-def and so I went with a BD player. BD also has more discs with uncompressed PCM audio tracks, if audio quality is important to you. The Sony player that you saw in the demo was very likely the BDP-S300, which currently lists for $499 (a near-identical model, the S301, sells at Costco for slightly less) but I've heard that the price will come down to $399 pretty soon.

But you may wish to shop around a bit.
