To offer a dissenting voice, I've had the 1200 for several months and have yet to encounter a disc that it would not play (obviously I haven't played them all). Also, to be completely fair, Samsung did recently release a firmware upgrade last month in response to the release of the Fox discs that had copyright protection encoding that many players would not play. So to say they have completely abandoned the player is not entirely true. If you go over to AVS and search the HD forums, you will quickly see that there are no pefect HD players out there at the moment, expecially on the BD side. Part of the problem is that BD is a continually evolving format, whereas HDDVD has pretty much been the same from day one.
Follow Ups:
The version 2 firmware update may be listed on Samsung's webisite but they have been unable to ship that update to me and they have tried 4 times. When I talk to support about the problem they tell me they have no way to guarantee that shipping will send me the latest update even when they clearly request the same and are told that they have shipped the wrong one many times. As I said before I have just given up on Samsung. They are disorganized and their support staff is poorly trianed. The right hand does not know or care what the left hand is doing. Sony is a very different, more competent and professional company. I purchased a Sony KDS-R70XBR2 rear projection TV that required a new fan after 5 months of use. Sony sent out a repair person with the part in hand in 3 days. They also followed up and asked for a written evaluation of their service performance. Samsung could care less. My 1200 is at their repair fascility as I write this. I received an E-mail notice from them that they had received it (of coarse I had to pay the $18 UPS shipping) and a tracking number. When I clicked on to the tracking number it tells me that have no record of receiving the unit. Again I give up.
Ok, so you've had a poor experience with Samsung, all I'm trying to say is that there are good and bad experiences to be had with all the big electronics companies. If you do a search under my user name over at AVS, you will find that I have previously posted about the excellent service I received from Samsung in response to a problem with a Samsung lCD tv I own. I had a tech in my home within three business days of calling in the problem, the same experience you had with Sony. As to the firmware, its easily downloadable from the website either via CD or ethernet, so there's no need to wait on Samsung to deliver it.
The CD-R would not work. The ethernet transfer would not work.
The CD download worked fine for me as well. I assume Samsung will update you player while they have it, but if not drop me a pm and I would be glad to send you my copy.
Maybe you burned it wrong.
