I'm watching the SD/Tenn playoff game and it occurred to me that football, and other sports too, should be broadcast in surround sound.
The announcers comes out of the center.
Crowd noise comes out the rear left and right so you feel like you're sitting in the stands.
Player noise could out of all speakers unless they found a sophisticated way to mike the field to make it more directional then place it where it is on the field.
Follow Ups:
The commentary by some of the announcers is so dreadful that I often turn it of. This is especially true of Monday Night Football, which I often find offensive. Rather than sit there in silence, it would be nice if one had the option of having all the crowd noise, but no commentary. With HD TV you can see so well what is happening you don't even need those guys stroking their own egos anymore.

I've viewed a few NFL games from my HDTV Cable TV box in Dolby Digital 5.1 so I assume that is "surround sound". Isn't it?

but not really as big a deal as it would seem to be. Either that or I'm so accustomed to it that the surround sound has become routine. The HD picture has not :)

Most broadcasters have the commentator guys coming from the center channel and field sounds from the satellite speakers.

Seems like everything was coming from the center when I watched the SD/Tenn game. This was on Vios on when of the HD stations. Could it be that only some carriers or networks broadcast the games in 5.1?
Would you need to do anything to turn on 5.1 capability if you have SPDIF running from the cable box to the receiver?
Or maybe it's Dolby ProLogic and you'd have to turn on a decoder?
Yes, some networks use true 5.1 and a few use either stereo or the primitive Dolby Surround.
