A year ago SED was all the buzz. The other day I heard someplace that it was dead on the vine. True? If so, what happened?
Thanks
Mike
Follow Ups:
Late last year Canon announced that they started development of a new electron emitter display technology that doesn’t use the Nano-Proprietary patented technology.
Canon's United States patent covering their SED display technology was reissued February 12, 2008. It has some modifications from previous SED TV patents.
Combine the ass dragging from Canon after securing the rights to make SED a real product with the following info:
Canon purchased the rights to use the intellectual property and patents for SED production. Canon didn't have the resources to make it happen. They entered into a partnership with Toshiba. Toshiba therefore had access to the IP and patents to make SED production a reality. Original patent and IP holder stated that Canon didn't purchase the rights to share the IP and patents. Canon dropped plans for SED production because 1) their lawyers knew they would lose in court Big Time and 2) the ass dragging allowed plasma and LCD time to ramp-up production and decrease costs. Even if Toshiba would have been allowed to build it, the competition would beat them at the wallet.
In 2009, Pioneer, Panasonic and Hitachi plasmas using 10-lumen tech will make you forget SED even existed.
Thanks for the insight, Joe. I only hope I can stave-off the upgrade until some of this new stuff coming next year gets reasonable in price. My 15 year-old Toshiba 32" CRT is still working fine, but starting to get a lot of pressure from the family to move into the 21st century. Pretty much settled on plasma and really seduced by the Kuro's. How much better do you think the new stuff will be than the current Kuro's?
Thanks, again.
Today's Kuros certainly put forth a beautiful picture, but the Gen 9 models will be better still. I just wish the wait for the "Holy Grail" black levels like on the Extreme Contrast models shown at CES wouldn't be so long (late 2009?). Panasonic will also have some nice models with improved black levels coming out, but their black levels won't be quite at the level of the Kuros and, fortunately, neither will the prices. :-)
While I wished SED would have succeded at the time, maybe the thought of a technology bettering plasma got Pioneer, Panasonic and Hitachi off of their collective asses to join together in 10-lumen tech. But seriously, who cares where the push came from. We'll get the benefits of the advancements in technology regardless.
Partly due to patent issues, but also due to the fact that it couldn't be manufactured cheap enough to be competitive.
