That's right. A gaming console, not a dedicated player.
In other words, HD-DVD lost out to a PlayStation.

It may seem that way to you. But I said that from the point of view of the average consumer. The general public just doesn't care.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (Tokyo:6502.T - News) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (Tokyo:6758.T - News), a company source said on Saturday.

The move will likely put an end to a battle that has gone on for several years between consortiums led by Toshiba and Sony vying to set the standard for the next-generation DVD and compatible video equipment.

as I said, they have a pretty close relationship and for Sony to reach out to Toshiba in someway to help heal the wounds makes perfect sense within Japanese culture.
Toshiba makes the IC for PS3, because SONY sold the factory to Toshiba.
We in the West will probably never truly understand Japan. I have tried, because I some years ago distributed Japanese products.
Japan is a few densely populated islands with few energy resources. That shapes the minds of the Japanese. They fight internally and have to cooperate at the same time.
