Toshiba is a CE manufacturer, just like all of the other CE manufacturers out there. No incentive is necessary because none were given to other CE manufacturers who backed Blu-ray. With HD DVD no longer viable, Toshiba will be "just another CE manufacturer" producing Blu-ray players. And with the loses and minimal profits they made producing HD DVD players, don't look for them to "give away the store" when they produce in blu.
Follow Ups:
Toshiba and Sony have a pretty close relationship and relationships between Japanese companies are quite a bit different than those in the west.
How is Toshiba (Japanese) any different than Sharp, Pioneer, Matsushita (Panasonic), etc -- all of which are Japanese companies?! You are saying that a dissenter would get considerations when those who took up arms for the cause got nothing.
That's not a cultural difference: that's stupidity.
as I said, they have a pretty close relationship and for Sony to reach out to Toshiba in someway to help heal the wounds makes perfect sense within Japanese culture.
Toshiba makes the IC for PS3, because SONY sold the factory to Toshiba.
We in the West will probably never truly understand Japan. I have tried, because I some years ago distributed Japanese products.
Japan is a few densely populated islands with few energy resources. That shapes the minds of the Japanese. They fight internally and have to cooperate at the same time.
