My dad has an old pioneer receiver that has a mono pre out for a center channel.
If I remember correctly, Dolby surround had a center channel that was limited in range, and unlike current receivers, you couldn't select large...every center was small.
Is that right? So if looking for an amp to drive a center speaker I don't need a very powerful one?? I am looking at getting him a T-amp for the center. WOuld it be better to just get a $150 modern day receiver?
This is a very midfi set up and quality is trumped by functionality.

Dolby surround's center channel (and rear channels for that matter) was matrixed from the two mains, it was not discreet. You can get an entry level DD receiver for a pretty decent price right now and the difference between the two formats is NOT small.
I'd say it's better to pick up a used recent-vintage HT receiver with Dolby Digital decoding. Dolby Surround was craptacular at best.
