Every HD disc I've seen (and I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players) has shown a definite improvement, often dramatic, over its 480p counterpart. Upconverting is great, but it will only take you so far. However, shot on video crap will always look like shot on video crap-you can't polish a turd. The results with film are often breathtaking, though-watching the HD-DVD of Casablanca was an amazing experience. I noticed details I hadn't seen before, and I've probably watched Casablanca at least a dozen times.
