gave a negative review of a product, then that manufacturer would boycott them, refusing to run ads in the magazine or send them product to review. As readers caught onto the game, they would stop cancel their subscription and/or stop buying the magazine. Another potential revenue source dries up.
No ads, no magazines purchased (either by subscription or bought at newsstand), then no revenue stream, no magazine. Simple as that.
This same problem is found in the guitar magazines, and probably other areas of commerce as well. This is why Consumer Reports exists. Unfortunately, they don't review audiophile or videophile type gear. And I wonder about some of their statements, though to a lesser extent.

That is quite a statement. Where did you come across this information? Please inform as to which publications and manufacturers were involved.
worked at a high-end audio store. He wasn't some high school kid--IIRC he owned the store.
This conversation took place about five years ago. I was talking with him after purchasing some gear from him & asked which audio/video magazines he preferred. He had strong reservations about the equipment reviews in several audio/video magazines, including "The Perfect Vision."
I deduced that there could very well be a conflict of interest. If a magazine criticized your product and didn't recommend it, would you take
an ad out in that same magazine?
I always look for "conflicts of interest." They're everywhere. I didn't mean to paint everyone and everything "black." But they ain't all white either.
