Here is the deal: I want to use my 34" CRT HDTV as a second monitor for my computer. I can't get good picture quality beyond 800/600, and even then, it is not clear as it is not a digital signal.
I have heard that there are DVI to HDMI adapters. What I want to know is this:
Is there a way to convert a DVI signal to HDMI, or does it only work the other way around. HDMI is the *only* digital input on my TV, so I would truly be thankful if someone would let me know if there is a way to take the DVI connection from a source and convert it into HDMI for video. I hear there is some really bad DRM surrounding HDMI, but I am hoping that the electronic manufacturers are not so in bed with the media industry that I cannot do this. If you can go from HDMI to DVI, then you should be able to go the other way, so I want to know if such adapters exist and if anyone has had success going from DVI to HDMI on an HDTV...
I already know there is HDMI to DVI adapters, I want to go from the DVI on my video card to HDMI on my TV to get the full resolution and use it as a 2nd monitor. I do not want to have to buy a new video card with HDMI *just* to get something to work that should be working already.
I am an audiophile, not a videophile, so I am lost, and everyone I have asked in every store doesn't know, or only points me to the DVI to HDMI adapters, so basically, they are clueless as I am.
Thankyou for the help. I don't know why HDMI even took off... DVI was fine and can support resolutions well beyond the 1080 resolution of an HDTV. If it was just to have audio in the same cable, that could have also been done without having to build a new convoluted system. It is almost as if the media companies forced the manufacturers to use this silly connection instead. It is crazy what they charge for one at the store, you can buy 5 6ft DVI cables and a couple 6ft digital cables for the price of a single 3ft HDMI cable.
Follow Ups:
Below is a link to monoprice.com (excellent service, quality products) and their page of HDMI-to-DVI cables (HDMI connector on one end, DVI connector on the other). The 3ft model is $5.51 or, if you want to splurge, the 6ft model is $7.28 (just make sure you have enough dinero for shipping (a whopping $4).
Also, make sure the video card will output a resolution and refresh rate that your CRT monitor can handle.
I always thought that if you could go from HDMI> DVI then you could do it the other way, however, every store I went to, radio shack, frys, best buy, etc, there are only adapters to go from HDMI to male DVI, so basically, expecting the DVI connected device to be the monitor, not the source, if that makes sense.
The link you send me clearly shows female DVI to HDMI, so this is good, I think I will order a wire and see how it goes. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I use my computer for much of the media playback, and also being able to have a good 2nd monitor would be great for my work. 800/600 isn't that good, and it's pretty much the best I can get on s-video before text becomes too hard to read. Upconverting using VLC media player has me excited too.
Thanks for the link and clearing things up, both you guys. On a different note, good component video from my HDTV receiver looks just as good, if not better, than HDMI. There is a case of "too digital" sometimes, but as far as the computer is concerned, the sharper the better.
Hopefully my videocard will see the TV as a 2nd monitor on DVI. I know it can do about any resolution imaginable, but the refresh rates have me wondering... interlaced DVI? I don't know, but worth a shot.
For source-to-source and source-to-monitor connections, both ends of the cable are male -- regardless of whether it's a DVI-DVI, DVI-HDMI, HDMI-DVI or HDMI-HDMI connection.
The source's physical connector will be female and the monitor's physical connector will be female, therefore both connectors on the cable will be male.
Same video signals, different pins, different connectors.
