My present setup is simple 2-channel audio and I'm using the Sony PS3 game console for Blu-Ray movies. I use the digital optical output from the PS3 into the DAC section of my Accuphase CD player.
I sometimes use this feature for other digital source components like low-end CD changers as I can get higher quality audio output from the Accuphase.
I was watching a Blu-Ray disc last night (Gone Baby Gone) but the only selections in the disc's Audio Setup menu were Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby 5.1 uncompressed. The Accuphase DAC locked onto the signal but I'm not sure what I was listening to.
Was I missing some audio information in the movie? I know the Accuphase can't put out 5.1. It's simply 2-channel. Many other DVD's and Blu-Ray discs offer a 2-channel PCM setting but not this particular disc. We still enjoyed the movie but it's nagging at me that we may have been missing some audio. Did everything get mixed down to 2-channel somehow?![]()
Follow Ups:
If the Accuphase took it, it was probably 2channel PCM since, AFAIK, all 2 channel DACs will ignore mch and DD or DTS, regardless of the number of channels. Somehow, you/someone must have set the PS3 to do this. If not, you should.

I vaguely recall a settings menu in the PS3 itself that allows it to default to PCM 2-ch. I'll have to navigate and double check.
So even if the on-disc menu provided for only DD5.1 and DD5.1 uncompressed, I guess the PS3 processes it down to PCM 2-ch. ?? The Accuphase DAC had no problem locking on to the signal coming down the optical pipe from the PS3.
Thanks Kal.

Yes, the PS3 can downmix to 2 channels when it processes the bitstream and converts it to PCM.
Go to "Audio Output Settings" in the "Sound Settings" menu.

We're watching another Blu-Ray disc later tonight. I'll have a look then when the PS3 is powered up. Thanks for the tip.

In the audio menu, the PS3 isn't set for Dolby Digital or DTS output: it defaults to 2-channel PCM. The multi-channel soundtracks are decoded to PCM and then down-mixed to stereo.
I'm good to go and no longer worried that I'm missing any audio. The PS3 is in fact set for 2-ch PCM which is what I need for now since my system has recently gone 2-channel only.
I will augment the 2-channel setup with a Denon 3808CI receiver someday for 5.1 duty.

Abe,
When you do get the Denon 3808CI you'll love it! I've had one for 6 months and love the new audio codecs they do sound better both in clarity and dynamics.
