I vaguely recall a settings menu in the PS3 itself that allows it to default to PCM 2-ch. I'll have to navigate and double check.

So even if the on-disc menu provided for only DD5.1 and DD5.1 uncompressed, I guess the PS3 processes it down to PCM 2-ch. ?? The Accuphase DAC had no problem locking on to the signal coming down the optical pipe from the PS3.

Yes, the PS3 can downmix to 2 channels when it processes the bitstream and converts it to PCM.

Go to "Audio Output Settings" in the "Sound Settings" menu.

    In the audio menu, the PS3 isn't set for Dolby Digital or DTS output: it defaults to 2-channel PCM. The multi-channel soundtracks are decoded to PCM and then down-mixed to stereo.

      I'm good to go and no longer worried that I'm missing any audio. The PS3 is in fact set for 2-ch PCM which is what I need for now since my system has recently gone 2-channel only.
      
      I will augment the 2-channel setup with a Denon 3808CI receiver someday for 5.1 duty.

        When you do get the Denon 3808CI you'll love it! I've had one for 6 months and love the new audio codecs they do sound better both in clarity and dynamics.
