Your shipping experience is definitely in the minority. As you can tell from the packaging, plasma display manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure that their products arrive in perfect condition. The most fragile part is the glass/substrate and the packaging is geared toward protecting this area first and foremost. Unfortunately, there's no way to 100% guarantee that a problem won't occur every now and then. Sorry to hear that your panel didn't make it in perfect condition. Hope the second time's a charm.
As for the buzz, all displays buzz -- to what extent is another matter. In order to hear my plasma buzz, the room needs to be very quiet and you must get closer than 1ft from the front of it. It's mounted on a wall mount, but it's not mounted to a wall. I built a frame that sits on top of the fireplace, but there's an open space behind the display. The former home owner had one of those 32" or 36" box displays and the fireplace area was custom built to allow for that 180lb monster to sit above the fireplace. Most wall mounted displays are mounted on a wall and the wall unfortunately serves as a reflector of any sounds emanating from the rear of the display. Room acoustics also play a part, as a carpeted room will be quieter than a room with wood or tile flooring.
Here's discussion regarding Pioneer's models:

Joe,
My experience is with a Pio 1150. It is quiet as a stone. Can't deny the buzz heard in the YouTube link Jack put up. Makes me wonder though about differences and what contributing factors may be underfoot. Why one buzzes and another does not. The obvious ones: different size (50" vs. 60") and latest model vs. one generation old. Others that occur to me are power treatment. In the video it's difficult to tell for sure but it looks like it's hooked up via a daisy chain of extension cords and a cheap power strip. No matter how you slice it, that aint good and could certainly lead to some nasty outcomes. From my previous experiences with power and audio performance I did all I could to ensure a good clean supply to my plasma. Outlets and connectors in the chain from wall to plasma are Oyaide XXX's, power cables are all excellent quality shielded copper and everything (including the cable box) are run through either filtered or filtered and isolated outlets. Is all this a guaranty that you won't get a hum? Maybe not, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Besides, there are other benefits to picture and sound quality. It does make me wonder though how many folks that are having buzz problems are caused or exacerbated by power problems.
There are many reasons that one could buzz and another be "silent", but there doesn't seem to be one factor that stands out. Poor QC, the use of different suppliers, different parts, altitude tolerances, temperature, wall mount vs stand mount, carpeted environment vs wood/tile flooring, etc. And any of those factors could be more or less of a contributor should another factor change (ie, quiet when stand mounted vs slight buzz when wall mounted).
My Panasonic is over 4 years old and to this day is very quiet, even when it's turned ON.
:-)
Yes, all plasmas buzz, but it seems some Kuros have more of it, especially some of the 60" ones. After scoffing at the "Green blob" rumors, I take these kind of complaints seriously. I'm not trying to talk people out of buying, but they should be aware.
