OPPO fanatics seem to Control the "DVD Players" forum.
I asked the same question over there and got flamed and insulted
by 10 or so OPPO lovers who didn't like the fact that I disliked
OPPO Products.
I asked about 3 times for the discussion to be about the differences
of the LINN, Krell, and Meridian and they kept pushing OPPO and flaming
me.
Then after I got a bunch of more insults like "stick where the sun
doesn't shine", my thread was canceled and I got an infraction..
I don't feel like there is a lot of integrity on AVS-Forum from
either the posters whom insulted me OR by the Moderator whom canceled
my thread and gave ME an infraction.
SO BEWARE... There are a lot of OPPO fans who manipulate AVS-Forum.
Ask questions about NON-OPPO products and you will be flamed and
hassled. In fact I suspect many of these OPPO fans are really employees
of OPPO whom pose as owners to persuade people buy OPPO.
Very sad how that board is manipulated. And the dishonesty that goes
on over there..

Hello,
I am in complete agreement about AVS. They are completely biased towards their sponsors. Utter a negative word about OPPO or Emotiva and watch your post disappear. It makes me sick.
Cheers,
JJ
There is no doubt the AVS owner is extremely protective of the advertisers. I suppose I can see that, if my living depended on it. I doubt a print mag would print "articles" whose sole purpose was to lambaste a current advertiser. Or maybe they would?? Anyway, there are always other places to go to vent your frustration. :)I have gotten away with criticising advertisers' products on AVS, but I do it by also saying something very good about them. It's never happened to me that I've bought a total POS, just wouldn't happen, but I am extremely critical of all the gear I have and can always find plenty of picky things I don't like after some experience. I am more bothered by people on AVS who don't see or refuse to acknowledge flaws in equipment, it's all "perfect" and flawless until they replace it with something "more perfect".
OPPO is great value for what they do (though they really only have 2 models now). Many of us consider DVDPs and BDPs totally disposable. Easily technically surpassed by something a few years newer that often costs less. Though many are loathe to admit it, and don't even check around/compare in case they find out the truth. A decrease in build quality is the likely downside though. DVDPs/BDPs/AVRs are the last places I'd sink much $$, they are so quickly shuffled off to irrelevancy. Spend $500 on a BDP, marvel at how good it looks for so "cheap", and throw it out after a year for the next greatest thing...keep doing this for 16 years and enjoy your $8k gradually. What you'd have after year 16 would make a total technical joke of what you would have bought in year one if you spent all that $$ up front (think VHS vs BD in the current context). Just one opinion... But I suspect you don't care about the cost, and I am a cheapskate. :) Actually, I'm sure a smart man like you can easily make $500 clear a year on $8k so the upgrades would always be "free".
Emotiva is a weird case. The two people I know who bought their amps returned them. You sure won't read much of that on AVS. And that's a problem, because people might get the idea they are audiophile-quality multi-channel amps for dirt cheap. Yes, some people actually think that will happen, the probably typical AVS member whose whole system costs less than $8k never mind just the DVDP. And for many on AVS, it's obvious Emotiva is their first experience with separate amps. All crticism of Emotiva is done by PM IME. It is fine enough stuff if installed in an AV closet (NOT in your listening room!) and what you mostly care about is volume. Not for the sophisticated quality music lovers, and to be fair I don't think the manufacturer suggests it for that, it's more the owners who tout it and you have to really consider their background/experience.

I got an infraction hit over there too, for criticizing region locking on Oppo's new Blu-ray player in the main Oppo thread after the complaint thread was unceremoniously closed down. The AVS forum set up a thread just for folks to discuss the issue long before the BDP-83 was officially released, but they only kept it open for about a week (shutting it down long before the player was available so that the criticism would scroll away), then no further discussion of the imposed region locking on standard DVD or BD was allowed on the site.
The reason for this is pretty obvious: just look at the banner on the AVS site (Oppo is a featured advertiser).
Don't get me wrong, I like Oppo players (especially the DV-983H) and personally I can't fault the audio section, but you should have a right to ask questions and set the parameters when asking for advice.

With all the "sales pitch" type OPPO praise on my thread which was clearly
focused on 3 other very highend products, I TRULY believe that there are
OPPO employees posing as "regular OPPO owners" on AVS-Forum who are
replying to NON-OPPO posts to try and convince people to buy OPPO instead.
I had like 10 different OPPO fans flame me inside of 10 minutes.
That's a real scam if you ask me and totally dishonest.
Audioasylum and Audiogon are full of helpful people who lend advise
with a common goal. (unlike AVS-Forum)
Of course, the fact that you "truly believe" that Oppo employees are responsible for the pro Oppo balance of the Oppo discussion strings doesn't make it so. For example, I "truly believe" that many of the anti-Oppo notes are posted by owners of high-priced components who don't like to hear about Oppo components being substantially as good as theirs in many respects. But the fact that I "truly believe" it doesn't make it so either.
Let me suggest that anyone considering a Blu-ray player, and/or an upconverting DVD player and/or an SACD player read the reviews of the soon-to-be-released BDP-83 which have been posted, and those which will appear in the next few months. - Or are all the reviewers Oppo shills also?
Jim
I have to disagree about Audiogon. If you manage to post one comment or idea that goes against the accepted wisdom in a thread, the mods will not permit you to post again in the same thread.
Maybe this is true.. I haven't run into any issues on the
asylum or audiogon. I post when I need A vs B opinions and
people are always great. On AVS it's "OPPO is the best and
if you don't agree we will flame you to death".
Tom80112, you must have had better luck than me on A'gon! I have had posts censored more than once, when the content of what I wrote clearly disagreed with the nonsense being spouted by the majority opinion. My posts were not rude or insulting, just factual...and contrarian.
Hope you get your DVD player recommends in this thread.
