I have noticed over the years that the Minnesota Viking’s purple uniforms sometimes look blue. On some broadcasts they are purple on some shots such as the sidelines and blue on others.
Why?

This was always a problem for me, too, especially before I started getting my sets calibrated. But sometimes, as you've noted, a different shot can be a different color on the same set... each camera is forced to use the light available to it, and lighting conditions are different in every location in the stadium. Some are in the shade, others in the sun, some have bright stadium lights just behind them, others have bright lights in front of them, etc. Or the Vikes may be wearing their throwback blue jerseys.
Blue and purple are close, but if you're seeing such a drastic difference in purple that it becomes blue, there's a problem. Are these differences in color only on HD broadcasts? SD broadcasts? If they're originally SD signals, is there a receiver/STB converting the signal to HD resolution? Then again, it may very well be that some of the cameras are out of calibration or the stations are in need of a calibration themselves.
Now if the other teams looked "blue", I'd say it was probably due to Brett and Adrian kickin' ass and takin' names.
Based on what I've seen from HD sports broadcasts, I'd have to say the cameras are not all "calibrated" the same. They are pretty uncaring about their broadcast quality very often for any of the less than primo events.
