Hello to Everyone !I am looking for movies, possibly on DVD, where I can find real sounds recorded with high quality
I understand that sound engineers use recorded unprocessed real sounds to give realism to the variuos scenes
My intention would be to use these very well recorded effects to test the audio reply quality of my stereo system
I am referring to something as the sound of the bells in the first moments of 007 "Quantum of solace" that I have found particularly realistic. Thanks a lot and kind regards,
bg

Behind Enemy Lines is a few years old but a great action film & soundtrack
.
Thank you very much indeed ! That's precisely what I was looking for.
I have two questions by the way (I am not an expert)
1) the audio quality on BR discs is a real step above that of dvds ?
2) do you know of a similar list for dvds as well ?
Thank you so much again and kind regards,
bg
BD audio is a step up from DVD audio for a few reasons. Even if you can only use the lossy soundtracks on a BD, DTS is usually at the higher 1.5Mb/s data rate and Dolby Digital is usually at the 640kb/s data rate. Each of these are higher than their DVD counterparts: DTS on DVD was mostly at 768kb/s and Dolby Digital was mostly at 448kb/s. If you can use the advanced codecs offered by DTS (DTS-HD Master Audio) and Dolby (Dolby TrueHD), you are getting a soundtrack that is nearly always equal to the master PCM soundtrack that it was sourced from.
Now, I used the words usually, mostly and nearly always for a reason: there are some douchebag studios *cough*Warner Bros*cough* who will at times release lower than expected quality for the audio on their releases (yes, even for recent BD releases). But for the most part, the studios tend to give you better quality, not worse, so BD is more often than not a step up in audio quality.
As for a DVD list of similar, there exists one at AVS Forum in the section for DVD movies, but I would guess that by now it may be in the archives.
"Thank you so much Mr Murphy for your very kind and extremely helpful advice".
Reminds me of the language and courtesy used when I used to frequent 'Outside' many moons ago.......
Not! :0)
Today is a gift - that's why it's called the Present.

Thank you so much Mr Murphy for your very kind and extremely helpful advice
Now I have no more doubts about BR discs (those well done of course) being a better tool to assess the overall quality of an audio chain
I will buy a BR player that can play the advanced codecs (DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD), you mention
The idea of as you say "... getting a soundtrack that is nearly always equal to the master PCM soundtrack that it was sourced from " excites me immensely !
Thank you very much indeed for your great and valuable support.
Kind regards,
beppe
My favorite Blu-rays for sound design (aside from the 2L audio only releases and Neil Young archives) are:
1. Ratatouille
2. Wall-E
3. The Last Waltz
4. Master & Commander
5. Inside Man
6. Quantum of Solace
7. Casino Royale (two-disc version)
8. The Prestige
9. Matrix
10. No Country for Old Men (not too much immersive sound, but extremely realistic and there is the solo explosion, car accident and small arms fire)

Thank you very much indeed for the very useful list
Now I have a good point to start
Kind regards,

...the new Star Trek film is also a wonderful sound design.
But for sheer, immersive soundscape glory M&C is my favorite. Absolutely brilliant.
Also agree about Pixar releases and Inside Man.
Thank you very much indeed

Movies aren't real. I love the dinosaur roar in Jurassic Park. If the have a world class sub you will come close to crapping your pants. If you don't; well that's life. I don't have a sub, tho my speakers go pretty low.The rescue scene in matrix is a real system workout. The spent cartridges tinkling as they hit the chopper strut is lovely. The depp bass thrum, thrum thrum of the Huey chopper is a classic, and the explosion
is another way of knowing how good your sub is.For reality, try Buena Vista Social Club. Lovely little movie, good music.

Thank you very much for your kind and helpful advice
My impression is that with a good recording a lot of system can do a remarkable job nowadays
Nevertheless, as you say, to get a high end performance implies a substantial system
I am mostly interested in testing the mid to high range performance of my present set-up as I have intention to add a sub to complete the the sound in the low frequencies
I am thinking of actively crossing at around 300 Hz my present speakers used as satellite in an arrangement like this one

of course on a much cheaper scale
Kind regards,
