I prefer the "old fashioned" picking up a movie, walking through BB when I want to rent something... That said, I rent maybe 2 movies a month, so I'm not helping them out much.
Follow Ups:
Strolling is one thing. Having thousands and thousands to pick from when
you can get info about them is something else.
Netflix and Blockbuster online
I would put a future new release Blu-Ray in my queue and on Tuesday when it was released my queue would say “LONG WAIT”.
So on that Tuesday I would go to my local Blockbuster and they have the movie waiting for me on the shelf.
On line = Fail.
How much per movie? I see the link right above for Canada's Netflix, but I'm scared to hit the banner. :) OK, I hit it. No limit how long you get to keep it for? I did not see any prices.
My main problem with that is I have no idea when I'll end up watching a movie. I might watch one this weekend as our usual Friday night wine night folks will be out of town. Otherwise generally 1-2 times a month, never knowing ahead. Still don't think it'd work for me.

Grant, I use Netflix with the one film at a time plan. For BluRay it costs about $11.50 a month. I average two films a week which works out at less than $1.50 per film. DVD only rental is a couple of dollars less. It works for me as I don't care about having a film on its' first day of release. I put desired titles in my queue and get them when they are available.

"Hey, you wanna have B&D over for a movie tomorrow night?"
"Sure, what movie do you think?"
"Well, I know B hasn't seen 2012, and I'd like to see it also. I know you'd rather see a girly movie, but I don't care what you want." (kidding on the last part)
"Sure, I'll text them"
"Text? What's that?" :) OK seriously: "Sure... WAIT, I have 2012 in queue and won't get it until next week probably. And next week we're going to S&D's for their party"
That's my life. Movies being in queue just doesn't work.
If BB AND Rogers etc all go down the pooper I'll have to look into "renting" through my cable box. Otherwise I'll watch even fewer movies (which is fine).

It all depends on which monthly package you choose. There's no time limit on how long you keep the movies. Most packages include unlimited movie and TV show downloads as well.
Never rented or watched a TV show other than when it's current or just to kill time. Renting/buying TV shows'd never happen.
Ah, monthly packages. Then I'm damned for sure. :) How about a monthly package of 1-2 rentals per MONTH. LOL....
I guess I'll wait until BB and Rogers go the way of the Dodo bird.
I appreciate all the replies!

Try watching a TV series you like off Netflix.
Just one episode.
No commercials, when you want it, and the picture and sound will be better
than off the air.
I don't watch broadcast anymore. If it's any good, Netflix will get it.
LMAO..well the last time I checked you could rent two DVDs with unlimited downloads for around $12 a month. I haven't used them in quite a while. The package prices may have increased since then. The TV shows are on the site with the movies. They're just an option for people that want to catch up on a show if they want to. It's just one flat rate per month. You could get two movies at a time and watch them and get two more. It just goes on like that. For a big movie watcher you could theoretically get 8 DVDs a month if you drop them in the mail after viewing them. The next two in your queue will be shipped out as soon as the ones you ship back show up in their system.

Sad to say..but chances are I'm right about this one. I can understand where you're coming from. There are still people that like to drive across town to pay a bill as well.
For the younger generation this is time and money(gas) that could be spent doing other things. So for them.. going online to accomplish the same task in 30 seconds verses 30 mins is more inviting.I stopped using disc nearly two years ago. That includes CDs,DVDs or Blu rays. The last Disc I used were Blu rays played off my BD-ROM drive.I don't have a disc player in the home, minus the ones in my computers. I only use those disc players to rip everything to hard-drive that I don't download from the net. In-fact I would say 99% of what I watch is from the Net or hard-drive. The other 1% is just OTA broadcast of local or national news.

Maybe it'll revert back to small mom and pop video rental stores. :) Yeah I know, never gonna happen.
For me renting from hard copy mail-in places is a definite no. I rarely have an idea when I'm going to take the time to rent/watch a movie. It just usually happens. So to plan a movie rental by having one sent to me, not gonna work.
Being forced to have a PC in my HT room... not a good thought. The future is grim perhaps for old folks like me.
I guess there's (in my case Shaw) cable providers, renting a movie through my cable box. Or is that what you mean by streaming? Yes, I'm that old. :)
As for banking, I've been doing the majority of mine online for as long as it's been available.

Here's my main HTPC/server I use to fool people with. No one knows it is a computer unless I tell them. All they see is an antique radio below my TV. lol

LOL...Grant having a PC in the HT room isn't all that bad..really. You can have it set to boot directly into the media center. You have the option of using a remote similar to the one used for cable or TV. The only difference is yours isn't leased..you own it. ;-)Here check out this little video on an HTPC that will latch to the back of your TV. People will come over and have no idea there's a PC in the room.
You have over the Net HD movie streaming as well. The picture quality may not beat Blu ray, but it surpasses DVDs easily.

Media center? You mean my SS processor?
There's nothing leased in my room. Are you referring to the cable box? Owned if so.
Back of my TV... but I use a PJ. So when downloading I'd probably have to have a second smaller monitor.... aaaahhhh it's too much. :)
Thanks for the link. It is interesting, but more than I'm willing to take on until/unless I'm forced to by potentially losing BB type stores (also have Rogers in Canada). Dawnrazor also spoke to me about a music server a while back. It's all interesting, but I grew up with big black discs. Maybe one day.... good chance ONE day. :)

LOL..Grant..you're hard to please :-) .I use a PJ as well. In fact I have a PJ and a Flat panel attached to the same HTPC.

But it's more that I'm very content with my video system as it is, so why make changes that offer nothing "better" to my eyes. YaknowwhatImean? :)

It's called convenience. ;-)
Ceton cable cards to your HTPC and you can stream your cable broadcast or record up to 4 channels at the same time. You can access those recorded shows from any PC on your network. You could record two shows at once and be streaming two other shows at the same time if you like to different TVs in your home. This thing does it all using the Windows Media center as the brains. It basically does away with your cable boxes in a nutshell. All you rent from the cable company is the cable card itself.
