I realize there are some ignorant/challenged people out there re: electronics, but Best Buy makes the top of the Scum list with this crap by trying to create a panic. While it's free from the manufacturer, the Geeks will do it for just
Follow Ups:
If my mom had a $500 Blu-Ray player and it couldn't play a new movie because of firmware issues, she'd first take it down to the store she bought it from, and would be really happy to pay ~$30 to have someone else deal with updating the thing, because it would either be that or she'd put it out with the trash and buy a new one.
Because my mom (who is 65, by the way) would call me and either I'd do the firmware upgrade or tell her how to do it herself. Cost? $0 and any moron can do it. Anyone who buys a Blu-ray player is either electronically unchallenged or knows someone who can do it for them without the $30 price gouge. And if your mom would throw away a $500 Blu-ray player because she couldn't get a movie to play, then she's got more pressing issues than firmware upgrades.
The bottom line is that Best Buy is taking advantage of people by creating a scare. Don't take up for them.
My mom's in her 80s and lives a few thousand miles away, BTW. No computer, no desire to get one.
At work, I am one of the computer guys and can tell you that quite a few folks care to learn only enough about the technology to do what they need to do, but move or delete their dock/desktop icons, and they are lost.
Why does an 80 year old have a $500 Blu-ray player? And I'm the computer guy at work as well. We obviously have had different experiences.
Regardless, $30 is price gouging and they're creating fear in order to take advantage of their customers. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" is a saying that comes to my mind, but obviously not to theirs. Or yours.
A trip to the dentist for a root canal would be less aggravation.
Selection and price. I don't find them that bad. I don't go to them for technical support or advice on what to buy.

Best Buy "salespersons" (and I use that term very loosely) make the guys at Home Depot look like Supermen. I had occasion to buy a new DSL modem recently and against my better judgement, I hit a nearby BB only because it's close. After wandering the aisles for about 10 minutes I came upon three BB employees in a circle jerk with one customer. After excusing myself for interrupting their high level conference, I asked where the modems were. Two of the salespersons acted like I wasn't there and the third waved her arm and tersely snarled, "They're over there" and went back to her conversation. When I went to pay for the item I waited patiently in line for next register, only to be told "We don't take cash at this register". After that, I just left the modem on the counter and walked out.
Selection alone puts them above pretty much anyone else, and the pricing is always competitive. I think the difference between the very best blu-ray devices and the better ones that Best Buy offer from Sony, etc. is much less than in audio devices.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Compare them to a reputable online dealer and the price discrepancy goes through the roof. Here's an example:
Panasonic TC-P65S1 plasma
Best Buy -- $3199.99 + tax (tax for the closest Best Buy to me is 8.75%) = $3479.99
Cleveland Plasma -- $2350 + shipping ($100) = $2450
That's over $1000 difference for what? Rewards points?
I shop at BB so rarely, that I discovered that those points have a limited life span-about 3 years. I got a bunch for buying a computer there, then the next time I shopped for something there, can't remember what, when I tried to use the points I was told they had expired. I rarely go to BB.

Sometimes they have a real good deal on an item that I want. I usually check out their ad online or in the Sunday paper (if we buy one). It has probably been at least 4 months since I've made a purchase at Best Buy and I believe the last time I did it was because I stopped there to waste some time before taking my kids to the show. They wanted a Nintendo DS game from the clearance bin (OK, so I guess $9.99 qualifies as a purchase).
When I see stuff like the "firmware" debacle, I'm reminded of yet another reason why I tend to avoid them.
