Regardless of whom you purchase this from, you must insist on unpacking it in your home before signing anything saying that it arrived in good condition.

My experience with shipping companies is that they make you sign BEFORE you open the box.
When I bought my Panasonic plasma five years ago, mail order, a trucking company delivered it. The driver and I carried it into the livingroom, and the box was specially designed to be kept correct side up. It had an easily removable top and sides, which looked to be intentionally designed that way as well. IIRC, the driver didn't even mention signing anything until he had removed the top enclosure so we could both see all was in fine shape. I got the impression the guy delivered lots of displays for this particular company, and was experienced. Made me feel pretty secure in my purchase. YMMV.
.........tip the guy to wait or refuse to sign. Otherwise, it is a "pig-in-a-poke" and an expensive one at that.

If the package is OK, it is hard to claim shipping damage. Usually, the box is beat up in some manner. If it is not double boxed, I presume the originating agent is responsible for that. Just received a wall mount in a HUGE double box. Really overkill. I imagine a flat screen double box could be rather big!!
Not sufficient in this case, imho. The glass can be damaged in many ways without any external signs. For example, if transported flat, the glass is unsupported and severe jostling can crack it without affecting the crate/carton.
Still flip-flopping over plasma versus LED, though. The latest Viera plasmas are still not available locally. I don't want a 'dim' flatscreen though -- not that I ever watch TV during daylight hours, though. Maybe, I'll wait till they arrive locally.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
