So you just go home and find a huge box on your doorstep?
I've always though I would buy this locally, but the price advantage and that some models are only available that way as well. H'mm.
Follow Ups:
I'll get over that part.
Yep, it went pretty seamlessly: No boxes tossed over fences. Hand delivered and setup in my living room.
First looks: Pretty incredible what you get for your money with these flat screen sets. The TC-P42UT50 model doesn't have the super black background screen (??), nor the five built-in loudspeakers, and the plasma picture is rather soft and not that vibrant jump out of the screen pixelated views you get with the current LEDs.
Put it on some soaps to see if it works: It is criminal how good it looks and sounds. I'll be wasting lots of hours with this set, undoubtably ;-)
...they offer 'White Glove Service', where the delivery guys bring it into your house, take it out of the box(es), put it on a stand or in a cabinet, and remove the box and packing material, all for $99. I'm presuming (but don't know) that you can plug it in and make sure it works before they leave.
Ordered my Sony directly from Sony. Was delivered professionally and no hassle at all. Didn't have to borrow a truck from a friend to go get it (a PITA, that).

Got my heart set on a Pioneer Viera Plasma TC-P42UT50. You guys have steered me to Plasma, my wife wanted the bigger screen ;-) I don't need the 3D (AFAIK) but I appreciate that the technology changes so fast that I actually am better off waiting.
"Pioneer"?
I own three Viera sets. Love them.

Local retailers are out of stock on 42 inch 1080P Plasma sets. To the rescue, Amazon. It would have been simpler if I would be satisfied with just any set from Costco, for instance, or even Best Buy. Yes, this is the future of retailing. They say they will even set it up in tmy home, so I don't have to worry about loading and unloading it into the van without breaking anything. H'mm, couldn't be easier, except for the time one must be available during usual business hours.
I am really not with the video technology scene at all, but I must admit, they pack a lot of technology into these flat panels. Let's see if I ever get to the stage of integrated LAN music/video. The only thing it won't be able to do is play a record for me ;-)
... However it depends on the size of screen you are talking about.
It might be different there but I find if you have some negotiation skills then a local retailer will price-match or close to it.
I have several flat panel screens and all were bought locally.
Yes, I found the best price online and then went into sea a local retailer.
The retailer has the choice to make a sale or pass. They choose to make the sale.
Also, I use the retailers own delivery people because then there is no issues with potential breakages. (They deliver it and unpack it – it is worth it for peace of mind)
I suggest if you are the type who stresses or will stress if the mail order goes bad (damage) you should try to get a local retailer to price-match or weigh up the difference in price.
If you have a good price from online then get the cash and go into a local store, if they carry the make and model, and make the sale there and then at the price you want. (They can only say yes or no)
Good luck.

cash. What were you thinking?
:-)
Anyway, I "mail-ordered" my first plasma display (50" Panasonic Commercial model -- that's what they used to call the division) in February 2004. No problems whatsoever, neither from the vendor or the display. I still have it.
I saw the new Sharp 80" LCD televisions. For that amount of real estate, I'm willing to forgo plasma quality for that kind of size. After all, the best plasma can do now is 65". Anything bigger and the price differential is beyond too much (just check out the price on the 85" Panasonic plasma from their Broadcast division). At the local SAM's (a "wholesale warehouse"), the price was $4698. I'm sure Best Buy would be even more. Add tax to that (nearly 9%) and the total is over $5100. You'd be parting with a great deal of money. Best price on the internet (no upfront tax and "free shipping" -- at least to the curb), $3950. That's a difference of $1150 and no local vendor in my area would be willing to give me anywhere near the internet price, even before tax. Don't know too many people who would not be willing to take the chance of a "potential" problem for that amount of dinero. And if the left over money was burning a hole in their pocket, they could buy a second television, a 60" Panasonic plasma, along with several Blu-rays to watch on those new televisions, at WalMart.
... So I know exactly what I was thinking of :)
Obviously everywhere is different.
The last screen I bought was a 65” Panasonic. The local stores did not have it in stock but quoted a price.
I found the best online price (not including delivery) and put it to the local store I deal with.
They matched the online price which was $1,110 less than the normal price and $710 less than the best price offered by another local store.
Delivery was inclusive from the local store.
I only deal with the owner/franchisee/ manager of a store. I simply offer them a price for what I want. The ball is then firmly in their court to price match or not make a sale.
I personally wouldn’t fuck around buying a 65 inch screen online if I can get it locally for the same price or within a few hundred dollars.
However IF there is a genuine $1,150 difference then of course one must consider buying online.

I'm nervous about how a screen is treated when being shipped by itself; is the factory packaging sturdy enough to survive being flung into trucks by gorillas? I suspect warehouse -> retailer shipments are better packed and handled with more care.
Regardless of whom you purchase this from, you must insist on unpacking it in your home before signing anything saying that it arrived in good condition.
My experience with shipping companies is that they make you sign BEFORE you open the box.
When I bought my Panasonic plasma five years ago, mail order, a trucking company delivered it. The driver and I carried it into the livingroom, and the box was specially designed to be kept correct side up. It had an easily removable top and sides, which looked to be intentionally designed that way as well. IIRC, the driver didn't even mention signing anything until he had removed the top enclosure so we could both see all was in fine shape. I got the impression the guy delivered lots of displays for this particular company, and was experienced. Made me feel pretty secure in my purchase. YMMV.
.........tip the guy to wait or refuse to sign. Otherwise, it is a "pig-in-a-poke" and an expensive one at that.

If the package is OK, it is hard to claim shipping damage. Usually, the box is beat up in some manner. If it is not double boxed, I presume the originating agent is responsible for that. Just received a wall mount in a HUGE double box. Really overkill. I imagine a flat screen double box could be rather big!!
Not sufficient in this case, imho. The glass can be damaged in many ways without any external signs. For example, if transported flat, the glass is unsupported and severe jostling can crack it without affecting the crate/carton.
Still flip-flopping over plasma versus LED, though. The latest Viera plasmas are still not available locally. I don't want a 'dim' flatscreen though -- not that I ever watch TV during daylight hours, though. Maybe, I'll wait till they arrive locally.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
I ordered a Panasonic 50" plasma from Amazon in November 2010. I called the shipping company and had them deliver the unit when I was able to be at home. They were very easy to work with and even carried it upstairs and checked to make sure there was no damage. Very satisfied.
Tubes and vinyl are preferred.
Cheers, Jeff
Ditto.
I've had 2 panels delivered. In BOTH cases the delivery guys insisted on making sure it was in one piece before leaving. The new boxes are 'easy open' / 'easy close' so the inspection doesn't even damage the box.
I, too, have a 50" panny plasma. Good Stuff, but a trifle warm running. Keeps my heating bill down in winter and AC bill UP in summer.
Too much is never enough
I had no issues with delivery to my door. 50" can be carried by 2 people.
