reviews of Panasonic in Consumers are excellent, but reviews on Amazon suggest that there is an endemic reliabilty problem with Panny.

I bought a BDP-60 specifically for it's wireless internet and 7.1 analog audio.
After ten months (of a 12 month warranty), the subwoofer went on strike. No way would the BDP output it. I called Peggy and they had e do a dabce and, ater two and a half hours, they had nme try the digital connection.
The subwoofer worked there. Peggy asked me if I could live with that.
I got am RA# ahd shipped it back.. Sizx weeks later I called asking where it was. A week later I got a refurb.
Again, the subwoofer didn't work. FWIW, It wasn't geting lost after it left the unit: It was not comig out of the unit.
Repeat process. This time, the refurbarrived in a week and a half. Along with the sub not workihng ere, the wi-fi dongle (i thik) didn'yt work.
Repeat process: Third refurb rrived and the sub again didn't work.
I gave up and settled for a different uit without analo audio.
No more Pannys for me.
I guess if they work right and never break, you're good to go but heaven forbid they ever need service, particularly under warranty.
Did they force you to get a refurb? Or was that an option if you didn't want to wait for your unit to get fixed?
I can't wait till car dealers start doing this. Take your car in for a brake job and they give you a different car because they just couldn't get your brakes working right.

Consumer Reports lists Panasonic as the leader in reliability. I think the number of failures is not as great as you would be led to believe (those that had failures are more likely to complain, so the reports seem tilted). My 50" Panasonic is now in its 6th year, and still looks fantastic.
.
I have a 4 year old Panasonic plasma
that has been trouble free with a great
picture. My sister has a 50" Panasonic
that failed in less than a year. They
repaired it in house under warranty.
Their was a bad bunch of boards in this
model that has caused a bunch of failures.
How can you tell whether your set will hAVE A BAD BOARD BEFORE YOU BUY?
HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL?
No recall but they have been replacing the
boards even after the warranty has expired.
Does the problem include sets still out there for sale?
I do not know.
