I want to ask for 2 tower speakers to complete my home theater for Christmas. My wife is great if I hint that I want it she will get it for me, but her eye for quality is no where near mine. I understand that it's the thought that counts, but let's be honest if I never hook them up she will get suspicious. Soooo any advise would be greatly welcomed.
Receiver: Denon AVR 1611
Energy classic 5.1
(That's 5 satellites and a sub)
I was looking at the Polk TSX550T but I read that the subs would be turned off since I have a separate sub and it would be a waste of money. Please help me out. Thanks

And they're only $1349/pr. - a pretty good value and would work well with your receiver...

They are awesome. I've never experience such good sound out of speakers in the price range.

One thing I forgot, in a surround sound system, timbre matching of the speakers is very important. The front to back and side to side transition makes a big difference. For this reason I generally recommend that folks use speakers from the same mfgr. and within the same product line. Energy towers might be a better match than the Tritons.
However, if you are thinking of upgrading the system sometime in the future, gettting the Tritons might be a good first step. Later on you could round out the system using Golden Ear's Aeon speakers for the surrounds. The center channel would be well served using one of Golden Ear's SuperCenters...

Speakers are a pretty personal choice, no one can tell you what kind of "sound" you will like. For instance, I like the Monitor Audio RX6 for home theater (and audio) and they work well with a sub but if you like a more laid-back or warmer sounding speaker you might not like them. You may still be able to use the subs in the Polks with your subwoofer it just depends on how they blend and sound together. The polks may even sound better for audio by themselves without a sub. I would suggest that you read reviews and forum posts on some of the brands below to narrow your choice down and then try to listen to them before you make a decision.

I looked at the Energy package and 550t's and don't see any reason why you'd have to unplug your subwoofer. It should be plugged into your receiver's LFE or Sub Out where it will remain. All you would do is unplug the left/right Energy main satelites and then plug in the Polk to take their place. I recommend making sure the 550t has a matching center channel, maybe get it if you've been a really good boy, but if not in the budget you'd want to add it down the road in order to keep with seamless panning of sound across your front sound stage. Right now the Energy all match but when you insert the Polk they will not match sonically with the Energy. In addition, be sure to run your speaker auto set up, this will level match all the speakers and the EQ will minimize the sound difference between the Polk and Energy.
