I'm in the process of getting all the parts for my 5.1 home theatre. I have polk audio front speakers, centre speaker and yamaha receiver in a 3.0 setup right now. My question should I add the subwoofer or surround speakers next I only have enough for one item right now?
Follow Ups:
How big are the woofers in your Polk L/R mains? If they produce lots of bass I would opt for smaller Polk surround speakers.
The Sub is good if your main L/R have woofers 6" or smaller.
I could actually find you a reasonably priced sub ($100-$150) I think AND some speakers that would do fine as surrounds for about $50 the pair.
I should have found out what he had first. I was thinking about what I have....

nice setup, very modest budget
There are Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers and Polk for about $100 the pair, too.
A specific budget would be nice.
Polk tsi100 fronts 1 inch tweeter and 5 1/4 inch woofer Frequency Response 53-25KHz
polk cs 10 centre frequency response 53-25KHz
Those are "medium" front channels. I would get the polk Sub ($129) for now, then add surround with a less expensive pair of Polks ($75 the pair) or go with the Dayton/Parts express pair ($35 the pair)
Either pair of surrounds should work well. The Polks make sense if you want to keep everything Polk. The Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers would work well as surrounds too. The frequency response of the surrounds is the least critical part of a 5.1 system.
I would say the sub, you'd probably enjoy the LFE a bit more than surrounds. Highly recommend using your YPAO (auto speaker set up) once you add the sub.
