How many here have stayed with old Plasma design vs the newer LED TVs? I bought a new out of product LG 60PB6650 just to have a new set that can hopefully provide another 10 years of plasma based service.
Follow Ups:
The Plasma, is as good as it gets!
One is a 15 year old Panasonic 42" that cost me enough to buy an 80" LED today. I bought another Samsung plasma a year ago or so when they were closing out one of their high end models for peanuts. The picture is smoother and more natural IMO, though the Samsung LED in the family room is quite good in the movie setting with a few tweaks. That room has too many windows and light problems for a Plasma.

The difference in pictures is simply night and day, in favor of the Samsung. Both listed for $2,800-$3,000, we both got ours for $2,000-ish. I've tried every possible setting on the Sony, it's just lifeless. The base model 65" Panny plasma in the media room kills the Sony and solidly beats that Samsung

I still use my 2003 Pioneer Pro-1000HD in my main system. I was a little worried about Fibe TV hookup without HDMI but it works wonderfully in 720p (which is the native resolution for HD on Bell) with component video and toslink into my Anthem AVM20. The next step is to replace my Esoteric DV-50 (at least temporarily) with my "new" Oppo bdp-95. I bought a Samsung 51" 5500 as a backup for $599.
You sure about that "native 720p" thing for Bell? We never used broadcast 720p video in Canada, unlike in the U.S., so I'm surprised they'd send that over some wired channel. However, leave it up to Bell to give us less for more, and go out of their way to do it...
My understanding is that 1280p is labelled "Super HD" and is rare on Bell.
Now that I think about it, somebody may have told me about the 720p thing right here in this forum some years ago, it does sound sort of familiar.
I know that there is a massive diff between the quality of what you get OTA and what Bell/Rogers streams, even on the fibre connections. I think most people have no idea. I have seen the streamed stuff and while I assume it adjusts to the available bitrate, if it's 720p that would also explain the diff.
The "local" (to Toronto) NBC affiliate from Buffalo is of the highest quality when it's broadcasting network programming, very impressive, even the sound is top-notch for the technology. I like to give them kudos whenever I can, broadcasters in general have gotten sloppy over the years (e.g. like the CBC, was higher quality 5 years ago).
Just bought a new Samsung plasma 2 days ago while I wait for OLED prices to come down and the bugs to get ironed out. The new Quantum Dot TVs are better than "regular" LED LCD TVs but still have the LCD disadvantages.
You'll be waiting a long time.

Samsung bailed, Sony was never really in. Panasonic is still in, at least for now, other manufacturers are in their development stage.LG is gung ho and currently selling OLED TVs. Their technology and process of making OLED panels is cheaper than Samsung's was and they have already brought the price of their 55" OLED TV down from $15,000 to $3,500 (streets even less) in a years time. Also, other companies may buy and use LG's panels in their own brands.
The problem is OLED panels are very difficult and expensive to make because manufacturers can't get the yields down to a level to make OLED TVs cheap and still profitable. LG is getting there.
Quantum Dot TVs may end up being the winning TV technology. The current QD technology being used in LED LCD TVs will eventually replace regular LED LCD TVs and self-illuminating QD TVs, that don't use LCDs, are a viable alternative to OLEDs. QD technology is way cheaper to produce and more efficient than OLED TVs.
Sure am glad I got another plasma while I wait this out.

As Panny doesn't sell the plasma anymore, the point is perhaps moot. My neighbor tells me he got the Samsung plasma, but he could be pulling my leg as he knows I'm a finicky audiophile already!
Once you get one OR the other, I don't think you will care either way and BOTH types of sets are good, otherwise there WOULD still be a market for plasma sets.
Yes, the plasma's are smoother and the Samsung LEDs are sharper and, maybe, a little unnatural.
If I were getting their largest size, 60-65 inch, MAYBE, I would care, but then the thought of being so wasteful of power would lean me towards the LED. Happy I ALREADY own a plasma set and have no intention of replacing it anytime soon, but I can enjoy the LED set as well.
Still using my Samsung plasma. I still don't see anything out there that comes close in color fidelity.
No pink/purple lines or blotches yet?. Your lucky. Mine
got them after 2 yrs., not too bad yet, I might try the
voltage adj. fix. Wish I went with Panny now.
I'm still using my 50" Panasonic plasma I bought in 2007. It still has a mouth watering picture. I still haven't seen anything else that looks as good, even with 8 years of technology improving the LCD types out there. I hope it lasts long enough until OLED becomes less expensive.
.
I got a Panny ZT60 Plasma when they came out. i haven't seen anything out there that is better. This should last me a long time, until other technologies mature a bit.
