...my wife and I saw this Friday night, only because we were too late for Cadillac Records and there wasn't much else to chose from.
Baz Luhrman has created an epic, at least his idea of what an epic film should be.
It contains a little bit of about everything but the kitchen sink that could be thrown in during the pre-WWII era - big cattle drive, dastardly villians, pumped-up manly hero on a horse, Pearl Harbor style bombing raid, Aboriginal wizard juju, racial injustice - and goes on for two and half hours. Best seen on the big screen.
In case you miss any of the emotional cues from the actors, the forceful music will let you know what to feel.
Nicole Kidman does a pretty good job of anchoring the drama.
The last time I recall a film being narrated by an Aboriginal boy, it was The Road Warrior, one of my all time favorites.
This isn't, although it isn't too bad.
I'd give it a B-.

Have you seen the rabbit fence?

Just saw it as well; your description fits much of the movie to a "T".
Perhaps someone will do an Aboriginal film epic on the "birth of song".
For me, "Australia" was aswirl with some mysterious and glorious mojo set against the backdrop of a hundred different movie shots we've seen over and over again, and other than the Aboriginal there seemed not much original about it.
I didn't see as much steam between people as stream between events.
Aboriginal "walk-abouts" are all song to finding the way -- that is evolution, that is connection, that is as real as I can imagine.
MORE from OZ, please!

...from the past with Aboriginal themes in case you missed them.
Rabbit Proof Fence
Walkabout
Down here we have been quietly producing some excellent films over the last few years.
Amongst those with Aboriginal... issues... you must add Ten Canoes:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0466399/
and Jindabyne:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382765/
Of course there have been many more very good Aussie films recently but these especially Ten Canoes, have the indigenous relevance.
I caught a few films at a local Native film festival and Ten Canoes was one of them, after that initial viewing I bought the DVD and haul it out for anyone who has not seen it.

... in film as in music has long been that we have been largely ignored bhy the rest of the world.
It has not done much for the earnings of our artists but it has allowed a considerable individual development.
Have you seen Look Both Ways?
Little Fish?
3 Dollars?
These have not all topped best of lists but do show a considerable strength.
We are more than a cheap resource with good sunshine for big time movies although those do pay a lot of bills.

as one of the best 50 of all time. The quality of four or five actors has never been surpassed. Great writing, story-telling, editing... all of it. I've watched it countless times and never have tired of it.
"They mutilated him....... with KNIVES!"
My wife enjoyed this line. What else could he have been mutilated with?
Spoons?
Twigs?

You liked it more than me; good for you!
