What happened to the other comedy thread? "Light comedy...no Dr Strangelove or Brazil"?
With the world going to pot, now seems like a good time to savor the lighthearted side of film with comdedies. What makes you laugh out loud or tickles your funny bone?
The most recent movie I saw in theaters that was laugh aloud hilarious was Death At A Funeral.
These films always bring a smile to my face...
Fairly "recent" films, 80's to present:
Death At A Funeral
The Incredibles
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Wererabbit
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
My Cousin Vinnie
This Is Spinal Tap
Best In Show
Waiting For Guffman
High Fidelity
Gross Pointe Blank
Say Anything
Groundhog Day
Let It Ride (Wonderful, underappreciated racetrack comedy)
Ferris Buhler's Day Off
Back To The Future
Chances Are (A guilty pleasure, but Robert Downey is brilliant)
Delicatessen
Tootsie
Lost In America
Working Girl
Broadcast News
Down & Out In Beverly Hills
Not quite so recent:
The Producers
Father Goose
Young Frankenstein
Monty Python & The Holy Grail
Life Of Brian
Paper Moon
How To Steal A Million
La Cage Aux Folles
Classics:
The Philadelphia Story
The Lady Eve
Sullivan's Travels
Palm Beach Story
Some Like It Hot
Born Yesterday
The Awful Truth
Arsenic & Old lace
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse (I'm a Realtor, and I live in The Money Pit)
Adam's Rib
The Front Page
Kind Hearts & Coronets
I'm No Angel
She Done Him Wrong
The Bank Dick
It's A Gift (W C Fields)
Duck Soup
Animal Crackers
A Night At The Opera
Modern Times
The Gold Rush
The Circus
The Pilgrim
Easy Street
The General
Sherlock Jr.
Seven Chances
Steamboat Bill
But are these enough to get me through this whole (awful) year?
Follow Ups:
... and of course "Young Frankenstein" and "A Shot in the Dark" are still there as old standbys.
does it for me, much more than any other Smith film. Napoleon Dynamite I thought was bloody marvellous too.
...my mind. With a fantastic international cast with the likes of Alan Bates in his prime, Genevieve Bujold at her pixilike best, and a comic turn by Adolfo Celli (aka Largo from Thunderball!) as well as its timeless message, all makes for a lovely film.
Beauty amidst chaos, humor and sentiment.
And then there's Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple", and Steve Martin's "The Jerk"....

These two off the top of my head....
Couldn't stand it. Thought Kevin Kline was completely hamming it up and couldn't believe he won an Oscar for such crap. Thought the movie was over the top cruel as well.
Wanda was one of those movies that struck a chord with the public, but not with me. The obsession with taunting the stutterer as a comic device left me cold. Also, my expectations were tempered by my expectation of ex-Python members Palin and Cleese to be Pythonian. I thought the movie was a decent caper flick. I never "got" J.L.Curtis, though she was somewhat attractive. Kline was vastly over praised in this film.

"...You're all welcome to stay for the next set...we're going to play all the same tunes, but in different keys..." -Count Basie
A truly hilarious movie.
.
"The Valet."
Good catch on The Valet. And I meant to put Tati down.
I love this little gem by Tati. Or "City Lights" by Chaplin. Or "Ruggles from Red Gap," with Charles Laughton. And "Man on the flying Trapeze," with WC Fields. And Blake Edward's "10" with Dudley Moore (Bedazzled was mentioned above). It's nice to think of the wealth of funny films, out there in the unfunny world. It makes me feel better.

Inspector General, Oscar, Some like it hot, Any Doris Day, Hope/Crosby road movies
A mid-50s Brit comedy with David Niven, Yvonne DeCarlo and an Irish cast lead by Barry Fitzgerald about a Brit aristocrat deadbeat who inherits an estate in Ireland and the locals trying to do him in when he announces he selling it. A very funny film with a lot of sharp Irish wit. Never made it to video. I keep hoping it'll turn up on Turner some night.
We're chasing terrorists in the wrong place...they're on Wall St.
I can hardly improve upon it.I think the funniest film I've ever seen, other than a few of the best Three Stooges shorts, has to be Buster Keaton's classic "Sherlock Jr.", also on your list. I don't think this has been bettered in the 85 years since it was made. It's a work of pure hilarity and unfettered genius.
The French actor, Jacques Tati, made some hilarious films, the most memorable of which is "Mr. Hulot's Holiday." It was made in 1953 but could have been a silent as one need not hear it to enjoy it. When one watches the best of Jerry Lewis or John Candy one is seeing a lot of Jacques Tati.
I love Laurel and Hardy and one of my favorites from them is "Bonnie Scotland." The snuff scene, the one where Ollie sneezes the river dry, makes me laugh until it hurts. It's silly but wonderfully so.
All of "The Thin Man" entries with William Powell and Myrna Loy bring me great pleasure. They are fast paced and clever and the casting of Powell and Loy can't be topped.
My vote for the greatest American talkie comedy film of all time is difficult but I would have to nominate "It Happened One Night." I can't imagine any way this film could be improved upon. It's been the standard bearer since 1934.
I think the best comedies of the recent past are "Silver Streak, "Airplane", "Fargo", and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?".
And I've always had a weak spot for "No Time For Sergeants" and "Stripes." Neither is exactly high art but I find them both very funny, especially the former.

...The recent remake of the Producers was panned by critics, but I like to watch both versions in sequence..
Another odd one "Clue"
Dare I mention the 1967 Casino Royale?
Moonstruck, Blazing Saddles, Election, Shrek, Swingers, Dumb And Dumber, Anchorman, Clerks, Midnight Run, A Fish Called Wanda, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Jerk, Slapshot"The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". I heartily second "Let It Ride"
...I decided they deserved their own thread. :-)
I also pondered whether Being There is a "light" comedy, or even a "comedy". Could be.
About a Boy
Top Secret!
Ghostbusters
Animal House
Dr. Strangelove
The Big Lebowski
Monty Python's Meaning of Life
Repo Man
Lavender Hill Mob
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Our Man in Havana
Bedazzled
The Wrong Box
The Dinner Game
Tampopo
Not really a comedy but I laughed a lot:
Fight Club
Unintentionally Funny (i.e., so bad, it is almost good):
Gangs of New York
On Dangerous Ground
Roadhouse
Two Moon Junction
The Assassination of Trotsky
Point Break
Love and Death (my favorite)
Sleeper
Take the Money and Run
Broadway Danny Rose
and later ones-
Mighty Aphrodite
Manhattan Murder Mystery
among others.
Also, even though most of Will Farrell's stuff is hit or miss, Talladega Nights was a pretty good NASCAR skewering.

Rat Race. Saw it twice at the theaters and still couldn't hear all the jokes, the audience was laughing so much. Had to wait for the DVD to hear everything.
The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother. Haven't seen this since high school, but it had several scenes that I nearly fell out of my theater seat laughing. I remember laughing so hard that I ran out of breath and couldn't laugh any more.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Pineapple Express
Nick and Norah's Infinite PlaylistAnd then there's Tropic Thunder.
Didn't see Something About Mary on your list.
All pale against some of the classics you listed.

and if yer talking Bill Hader,
yer talking Hot Rod. (love it or hate it, there's no middle ground)
And Hot Rod of course has Isla Fisher and her two talents which leads to
Wedding Crashers
I was editing it and accidentally deleted it. You covered some good ones that I had on my short list. But you missed "The Blues Brothers".
Yes, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a good one, and I know you were just referencing "The Money Pit", but I was actually contemplating adding "The Money Pit" to my list. I left it out because I thought I would be mercilessly berated for doing so. To me, it was laugh-out-loud hilarious.
...repeated viewings to get past the horrible truths of it.
Please do add it - Shelley Long is sooo cute too!
Essential.

I do enjoy The Money Pit, even though it isn't a great movie. But to anyone who's ever restored or remodeled a house, it's hilariously on target.
Sorry to say, I just don't love The Blues Brothers. And I know it's an iconic movie. I just...don't.
But a guilty pleasure of mine is My Blue Heaven - so there ya go. I just love Joan Cusack. Loved her as the jilted Bride in the Kevin Kline movie In and Out.
Her jilted bride, especially the bar scene, (Is everybody Gay???) and outside on the street, "Will someone marry me", was FOTFLOA funny.
And of ocurse, if we're talking kevin Kline, we're talking.....
...perfect! KK was great in that movie.
I was always amused In & Out was set in Indiana...not much of Indiana looks like that, especially since it wasn't filmed here. ;-)
Meet The Parents (Deniro)
Tropic Thunder (Robert Downey Jr)
Airplane! (Everyone!)
The Naked Gun
Shaun of the Dead
Bowfinger (Eddie Murphy still has it)
Baba-Booey to you all!
I was a little disappointed in how less funny it is to me now than I remembered it being.
I still laugh at the same gags...ok, most of them anyway.
Baba-Booey to you all!
d
I knew I was majorly missing one. It is priceless.
I have to confess, I used to think The Big Lebowski was a guy thing. But it's grown on me tremendously, and I do adore Jeff Bridges.
GW
...If I may add a few faves that come to mind:
Catch-22
Soapdish
Don't Start The Revolution Without Me
Lolita (Kubrick, 1962)
The Hospital
Bedazzled (Cook & Moore, 1967)
Stroszek (if in the "weird is great" mood)
Down by Law
I luv Soapdish! What a cast. Another favorite I missed. I shouldn't do these late at nigth when I can't see my DVD shelf lol.
Bedazzled is wondeful. I was lucky enough to see Cook and Mmore onstage in "Good Evening" wha I was a student. They were wonderful.
And speaking of Moore, I used to think "10" was pretty funny, although I haven't seen it in at least 15 years.
Late night is tough to do from memory - miss so many.
Your list got me thinkin' - I've been trying to find the "Soapdish" dvd with no luck locally.
Ever hear the term "moratorium", for when no one is distributing or re releasing the dvd? I couldn't believe "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) was not available because of this - kind of sobering.
Working off yer themese, I'll add,
First, this isn't an addition, just a comment, Lost I America is simply genius. I'll never tire if it. The Nest Egg Concept rules.
To your Christopher Guest and Michael McKean movies I'd add The Princess Bride and The Brady Bunch Movie
Any scene with The Dude in it from Lebowiski brings a smile to my face. I believe that would be every scene but 1 in the movie. I crave "Caucasians" and satisfy the craving for days afterwards. The Dude abides.
If we're talking Billy Murray then we're talking The Rutles and Caddyshack.
And if we're talking Caddyshack were talking golf and we're talking Tin Cup, the movie Kevin Costner was born to star in.
And if we're talking Kevin Costner, then, wait, Tin Cup was it.
John Cusack flicks? Better Off Dead. We still call em "Fraunch Fries" at the house. High Fidelity rules, however, in the Cusack comedic ouvre.
Guilty pleasure? Blind Date. "Is this a new car". "Yea, just got it home from the dealer". "RALPHHHHHGGGHHHHHHH." It had some moments.
Others:
Office Space
Go
L.A. Story
Ruthless People
Get Shorty
Big Trouble (I'm no Tim Allen fan but the rest of the cast was just terrific). Gator Fans!!!!
Two Days In The Valley
Pee Wee's Big Adventure

which I think is an Oscar worthy performance.
I debated putting in Lost In Translation, which I'm not quite sure is a comdey...although it is very good, and Murray is great in it.
If you put " High Fidelity ! on your list, then You can put this one too!
but more than a few smile worthy moments. Lost in Translation that is.
I wonder if I would get banned here if I mentioned Idiocracy in the same breath as some of these other, very worthy movies?
+ the best scene in High Fidelity was left out of the film ( ! )
GW
...it doesn't advance the plot. That's why.
But it sure is nice to have.
And I coulda had The Sure Thing and Better Off Dead on there too.
I love that bit from High Fiedlity. As a record collector, I just related so much to that movie, and I used to make compilation tapes for all my friends too.
.
no need to feel guilty :^)
I did not see Imposters on your list. If you have not seen it you have to rent it soon with Stanley Tucci, Oliver Platt, Billy Connolly, Steve Buschemi (super funny as a suicidal singer) a classic slapstick comedy in the best sense. One of the best comedies ever IMHO
thanks
Phil
