Where music is thematic. The North African Zar trance dance scene near
the end of "Exiles" is transcendental. The women's flamenco singing in
"Vengo" is expository, whether you understand the words or not. "Latcho
Drom" and "Gadjo Dilo"? Music as the bones, sinew, and tendons of
existence itself. Thus, few directors make films as engrossing and as
engulfing as Gatlif. Regards,

  I consider Gatlif an Eastern European director, even though he's French/
  Algerian. I'm fast and loose that way. Have you seen those films I
