It's great entertainment and the plot was actually beefier than I ever expected. Fook a bunch a bad reviews if it has gotten them. This is an interesting story with the apes getting the most screen time.
Watch for the world's biggest cheap shot...you'll know what I'm talking aboot. Otherwise, go jeer the humans.
Follow Ups:
For the life of me I can't figure out why this movie is so well liked. It goes from a badly paced movie with a decent premise to a typical studio piece of crap mid way through. The CGI was nothing short of painfully obvious and the action had no connection to actual physics. May as well have been a cartoon. Speaking of which, that would describe every character.
This movie just plain sucked IMO
It had more heart and more soul than every other summer movie from this year combined. And I liked a lot of this summer's movies.
But this is an instant classic. Caesar was just an incredible character.

Children of Men
Moon
Serenity
The Road
District 9
Never let me go
Sunshine
The Prestige
28 Days Later
Inception
Not really Sci Fi but a good ol fashioned us v them (in this case, "it") flick.

Cloverdale fell apart for me in the subway tunnel.
Now Quarentine is another matter. That one held up from start to finish.
and the hot chick exploding a few minutes afterwards. I wonder why Lizzie Caplan doesn't get more substantial roles? That and her True Blood arc are the only ones that come to mind.\\Another good creepy flick, The Descent.

My problem with the subway was you had these creatures that were eating military like popcorn struggling against four rogue civilians in an envirement that would favor the creatures. Very inconsistant IMO. Also I had a big issue with them being the only ones left on the island. From that point one they pretty much didn't see anyone. They are in a toppled building (huge problem in my book) looking for a friend (really?) and not only is it abandoned but apparently nobody died in their when it was toppled. For me it just made too many glaring errors after the first half. Given the format errors like that were a problem IMO
plot device tho, to keep em in the city so we could see Cloverdsle smash some shite up. I don't think they so much "beat" the little subway monsters as they got away from them. And remember, the hot chick blew up all to hell and back so the little monsters got one human.

Inception was interesting, but deeply flawed.
28 Days later. Seriously?
District 9. Good movie, but simple and somewhat tedious.
Moon. Good low-budget film with another great Rockwell performance, but best move? Not close.
Nothing on that list is close to the fully realized vision from 'Rise'.
And Caesar is just an amazing character - quite unique in the history of filmed SF.

Have you seen Children of Men?
But the wife insisted. So I got some popcorn and sat down. Wow! I really liked it. I liked the major plot of the apes vs. the usual mad scientists in white coats. Yes lots of references to the original, very nice indeed.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
Interesting story and the CG effects worked though not totally real looking. But the story carried it.We need more Science fiction and less zombie/horror. Though Zombieland (with harrelson) was OK. Ughh... tired of creatures that have no brains. No character development with those beings.
Sorry for what appears to be a rant. I may be getting too sophisticated in my old age.

"Ughh... tired of creatures that have no brains."
Keep away from the UK for a few days then until we have them all locked up.
Today is a gift - that's why it's called the Present.
Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
They did not go too far into the personal issues with Franco/Lithgow etc. and lose focus on the ape (s).
They also did a good job with the camera work and kept it fun, and the tone of the movie was just right, it was not especially violent like it could have been.
excellent popcorn movie! IMO

"They also did a good job with the camera work and kept it fun, and the tone of the movie was just right, it was not especially violent like it could have been."
They are strong enough to pull arms out of socket, pull the locked car door from the hinge, with teeth sharp enough to rip face off.
(and maybe a PG-13 rating) they were not needlessly violent.
fwiw I remember on TV, a scientist said that a chimp can easily bench press 600 lbs and a gorilla can easily bench 1500! He kept stressing the word "easily" - scary stuff!
Phil
.....I remember reading a non-fiction by a professional hunter in Africa, when he witnessed 4 chimps ambushing a fully grown adult male leopard and and ripping it apart.
Of course, in another incident, the ambush failed, and leopard broke the spine of one of the chimps with one swipe and badly mauled the other two.
...still.....one wouldn't want to mess with even one chimp.

Phil
As I recall, the Icarus (Mars mission) was reported "lost" on the news. Perhaps this is the "link" to the sequel? Somehow they go forward in time and return to the future "Planet of the Apes"???

It set the stage for the first movie.

there were a couple of catch yer breath moments, "no" and "Ceasar is home".
I wonder why they didn't spend 30 more seconds of screen time developing a storyline about the virus getting loosed on the human race, thereby causing our downfall. Franklin got it, kilt him, he sneezed on obnoxious neighboor. A scene with obnixious neighbor sick and sneezing on, oh, a cable car packed with peeps would have been a nice added bit of exposition.
That nitpick aside I think they did about all they could in 1:50 of screen time. Fake apes looked damned good.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
The neighbor was an airline pilot. He took a cab to the airport, sneezed blood on some old lady then went to his plane. The credits ran over a world map showing the major flight paths giving you the clear sense that this was going "viral" in worldwide dimensions.
They are set for a new franchise.

!
Phil
So they had to get cute and show the freeking MOST IMPORTANT PART AFTER THE MOVIE ENDED.
Bastids@!!!
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
The kids and I are now in the habit of being held hostage by the end credits. Way too many have plot development that occurs after the credits end.
The Avengers super hero family is particularly onerous.
Wrong wrong wrong.

nt.
"rewards" are out-takes. Only show I've ever seen where such an important part of plot exposition was withheld until the credits rolled.
I crap thee not, I'm pissed.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
Ever see the Iron Man movies?
Actually, any of these damn upcoming Avengers "prequels."
Hangover? Lots of plot hidden in the end credits.
Other recent ones...
Fast Five
Pirates of the Caribbean
I'm getting used to being held hostage until after the damn credits.
![]()
But yea, some "plot" hidden in them pics. Can't remember Ironman's or Pirate's plot exposition after the credits, mebbe checked out of it early.
Have a couple of Pirate's DVS but that would require getting off the couch and inserting them, waiting for the TOC to be read, and going to credits. Think I'll make a mrgrta instead.
Never saw Fast Five, should I?

RW, you funny.
Hint: Catract and facial scars.

...it's not bad, a decent popcorn movie.
But it's hard to get emotionally involved with a CGI/motion capture chimp, who is the star.
The monkeys do look pretty realistic.
Best part of the film is the Bay Area scenery - Golden Gate and Muir Woods. Chimps riding on top of a cable car is a great scene.
Captain America is a much better film - and probably so is Cowboys and Aliens which I'll see tonight.
I'd give it a C.
I enjoyed Rise and had fun catching the references to the '68 film. I saw five and expect there were some I missed. I thought the CGI was excellent and the apes looked pretty real to me.
Cowboys and Aliens was quite entertaining as well though not as good as Rise.
I recommend both films as good popcorn movies.
This is the first time we've ever seen two films in one day. It was fun.
-Wendell
Great topic, references to the 68 flick!
The name Caesar.
"Bright Eyes"
The Mars mission, and then it getting lost. The ship was also the Icarus.
Charlton Heston on the TV.
"Get your stinking paw off me, you damn dirty ape."
The rope nets catching the apes like they did the people in the original.
The cages at the 'refuge' and the water hose scene.
I'm sure there are more!
![]()
Unless I was seeing things there was an early scene with Caesar holding a broken model of the Statue of Liberty as he was looking out the window.

He was assembling a model!

.......how does it compare with Burton's remake?
*
![]()
........tried to do Batman.
So is this comparable to Batman, New beginning?
It's where your head is when you see them. Nolan's Batman was super in my book. "Ape" is not necessary a 'dark' film like Batman.
![]()
.......in the sense of 'darkness'.
I meant as a 'worthy'.
plausible than any of the Ape movies. I had no trouble suspending disbelief. (Unlike the deficit reduction package.)
