I'm total new to the world of Blu-ray and such, having been out of Home Theater World for the last 6 years or so, and at that point content with plain old DVD (and DVD-A from the audiophile stand-point) played through a (then rather good) Sony rear-pro LCD.
Well, having just bit the bullet and purchased an 50" LG plasma and gotten HD cable, I am considering diving into BD, since a few movies like my Star Wars Trilogy (yeah, I went there...) are a little worse for wear (lent out Ep 4 and it came back unplayable after the first 40 minutes).
My thought so far has been the new (?) Oppo BDP-103. Does anyone know who sells it in CANADA (and a price north of the border)? the net hasn't been very forth-coming with info, other than specs so far...
TIA!

Follow Ups:
Dual processor core so it loads quickly. Plays SACD & DVD-A. Dual HDMI out which is really nice, one cable to the TV for normal watching, a second to the home theater system for movies. Does 3D and 4K resolution. Makes DVD's look too much like blu rays.

I was just at the Sony website, and there nothing there denotes that it plays DVD-A... Hmm

As I replied to the reply, I didn't see DVD-A listed at the Sony website (although they still list the player as available)...

Every so often, Walmart puts those on sale for $48 instead of the usual exorbitant $78. It has the particular virtues of being region-free capable for DVD and will convert PAL DVDs to NTSC, and the Blu-ray region can be changed at will. It'll play avi and mkv files from a DVD-R or USB device, or wma and mp3 audio files, but not FLAC. The hard power switch is on the back, which is awkward, and so is the USB port. Apart from that, the remote is decent, and it has both Toslink and coax outputs for S/PDIF, and even composite video if you want to watch Blu-rays on an ancient TV. You can find name brand Blu-ray players for the same sort of money, but they're unlikely to be region free and may not handle PAL DVDs, regardless of the region setting.
There was an earlier hardware revision of this model that ran hot and had a noisy fan, but that was a couple of years ago now. There's some discussion of this player at Redflagdeals.com if you want to know more.
I'm pretty sure it won't do DVD-A; I tried a home-made disc and it wouldn't play. Still, you probably own cables that cost more than this thing. And so far, it's been more reliable than my first Philips CD150 that cost something like $300 new in the '80s. I've never used the analog audio outputs, though.
if you like panasonic you would have to go with there 1st model the bd 10. maybe used on ebay. there rare to find.I have 3 of them. they were only $100 ea. bd & dvd a. there are a few models after that one that are dvd audio too.but only 2 channel.it has hdmi out so I should test it to see if its mch. the first model is big with a computer type transport. its a tin box different looking plays all discs any way theres mch analog & hdmi. I like the new oppos too but the cheap prices are no more.
dts-cds dvd-audio &mch sacds & blu-ray concerts & speaker amp sound system tweaks rule
Great picture & sound and plays every shiny disc format I require.

Happy shopping & enjoy!
The menus are intuitive, very easy to set up, and the bluray picture quality is amazing. I have three and all have been trouble-free; I can't see any reason to spend more. The LG, Panasonic, and Samsung models that I've set up for other people have been needlessly complicated and a real PITA to use.
Maybe try Denon. I have one in my 2-channel rig with good results.
Thanks! Didn't think of Denon.

A LOT.
I have one, it's a very nice player. But there's a $150 Panasonic that's even less on Amazon and reviews say the video is as good as the Oppo and the Netflix streaming is better.

I did mention that I needed something that would do DVD-A as well. surprisingly, NOTHING on Panny's website does, which I find shocking, as my current Panasonic player does.
I'm still not committed to ANY brand yet. The wife and family members seems too interested in my thoughts here at AA regarding this. Could be good, or horribly wrong come Christmas morning... Hmm.

Thanks! The wife and family are eying my postings here, so i have a feeling Santa might provide something great or horribly bad...

You might get the same pair of socks that you've returned last Boxing Day...
