It would have been helpful to provide the brand and model numbers of the TV and loudspeakers.Because the 1/8" jack is for earphone use it is thus a variable output, which I will assume you need for the new self-powered speakers. The RCA output might also be variable (you might have to choose between fixed and variable in the TV's menu). If the RCA output is fixed only (for use with a stereo receiver, for example), you do not have a choice.
The 1/8" output utilizes a small power amplifier to drive earphones. If the RCA output comes directly off the preamp section it might sound superior.

That gives me the basics of what I need. It didn't occur to me that the headphone jack would be connected to an amp. That makes sense.
I think I'll try the RCA output first because the speakers have a volume control.
Thanks.
You may find that using the speaker volume control is limiting unless it comes with a remote. Being able to change the level depending on the station or time of day is handy, particularly the mute button.
