I've yet to see an LCD that compares. Just spent a week with relatives who have a 4k Samsung and the display is cartoonish compared to the realism of the Panasonic plasma. Will professional calibration be required to get a realistic picture? Is it possible?

Hi and sorry ... may i ask which exact model you have ?
You say that the picture is spectacular ?
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards,

No manufacturer makes plasma TVs any more. Panasonic quit making them in 2013. The Panasonic Viera TC-PxxZT60, TC-PxxVT60, TC-PxxST60 and TC-PxxS60 series were all very good plasma TVs with the ZT and VT being the best and the ST (and even S) not that far behind.
xx = diagonal picture size in inches. (e.g. TC-P65VT60 = 65" display)
You can still find them new if you look around and certainly used or refurbished. They were heavily discounted in 2013 but you'll pay through the nose now.
Hi and thanks a lot for the kind advice.
Actually i have an old Pana plasma myself .. a cheap one ... TX-P42G20E
I love the picture.
But i would like something less heavy ... a good LCD could be a fine alternative
Kind regards,

Later this year, LG will be coming out with *flat* OLED TVs.

You could keep buying Panny on the used market.
because the screen is larger. They're thinner, use less energy and come in all sizes and are still manufactured.
However, I love to stare at the images of the Panasonic, especially for nature programs.
How large a screen to you own. My largest Viera is 65 inches.

And you can lift the screen yourself to install? It was one of my requirements.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to attempt mounting a 65" plasma by him or herself. Anything above 50" would be a challenge. That's what friends are for.My question remains...any recommendationof an LCD that matches plasma for realistic picture quality. I've seen a bunch and none compare. I certainly have only seen a small percentage of those that are out there.

I got the 55" LG OLED (curved screen), and am very happy. It replaced my 4 year old Panasonic Plasma, which failed and the company couldn't supply replacement parts. The picture is wonderful. I was dubious about LG quality. If it too fails, I'll be very disappointed. So far, so good. Really.
Do you think that this is just a fad with curved screens??
Really big screens ought to be curved, but only 55 or 65 inches, I am not so sure you want to look at them up so close.
It's hung on the wall with cables, like a picture. The way it's balanced, it sits fairly evenly, though it's not flat. I'm not articulate enough to explain it's physical positioning. I thought the curved shape would be a possible problem, but it's ended up a success for me. The picture quality is the best I've seen (to quote a generic audio reviewer line) in my home.
I'll keep it in mind. Hope my Vieras hold up for a few more years.

I'll bet they will last a good long time.
Regards
Hope so. I got a 65" of the ZT series shortly before they stopped making them. I'm not a fan of curved screens.

I'm hoping my plasma will last a long time. A calibration will certainly help the 4k tv, but it will do only so much. As already mentioned, OLED may be the way to go in a few years. Rumor has it that Samsung may adopt LG's technology, which is better as well as cheaper and easier to make.

Me too, with no lifejacket! Last gen. Kuro, still running better than new (seriously, it is much better than new, but then I know the guts and have the tools). Apparently 20k hours is nothing for them, and I hope that's true, I hear 40k hours is easily attainable. I agonised over whether to get a Panny as a backup when I heard they were also exiting the biz.
I just don't trust Samsung, though I'm using a nice large Sammy with this PC and it's fine for *that*, they do not have a reputation for standing behind their products, especially displays, least in Canada (they sell the same models here as in the U.S.).
LG is not exactly a brand I'm willing to spend big bucks on, not based on their track record, they are a "low-end" brand regardless of what they may charge now, and they'll have to go a long way to prove themselves...a la Hyundai/Kia...it takes time and a record of good product, not just hyped advertising.
And especially so with a "new" technology, I have used OLED for numerous years and it goes to pot pretty quickly. You know, like noticeably much worse just about after the warranty period is over, it does have a life span. But what is that life span now? They sure won't tell you. People who buy a new display every 3 years won't care, OLED easily lasts that long, but people like me who like to buy "good" stuff and keep it around for a while should be wary. Not that us plasma-lovers will have much choice...
OLED is pretty much the best hope for plasma owners.
I think it's down to one manufacturer, LG.
Good news is they seem pretty dedicated to it.

That's what I think but its going to be a few years until the price comes down to where plasmas were. My DLP tv just started developing white out pixels and I spent about $400 replacing the part rather than to buy into today's uncertainty. The 4k tvs have no sources and no agreed upon tech yet. I figure this will shake out in 2 - 3 years.
Right On! LCD/LED is no comparison for Plasma
Now, will LG pick up the engineering talent that brought us the 60 series? The VT60 may have been the finest TV ever made.
Not to forget that Panasonic got talent from Pioneer when the KURO line closed.
LG is the last game in town. I don't see the incentive, however to make the ultimate Plasma.
Sure, a great picture. BUT. 1080 is now so last year. 4k is where it's at and I don't think you can make a plasma with such small cells. Just a thought.
Too much is never enough
The price needs to come down a lot before I can afford a 65 inch model to replace my Viera.
