Lightweight WW2 action film extolling the virtues of T34 tankers and their skills against SS Panzers. Shot in a modern, updated style with excruciating slow-mo shots of projectiles bouncing off and passing through tanks takes popcorning to a new level.
Nazis evil beyond pale and Rooskies have halos. Not much in the acting or dialog department but a fun trifle for the WW2 history junkie.

From a WWII Russian perspective, damn right Nazis are evil and Russians are saints.I think we could use another tank flick. "Fury" was good by highlighting the crew; 'tank drivers are people too' perspective.
I hope this one doesn't go all Justice League.

I know Brad H., who 'drove' one of the Shermans that ended up getting destroyed.
He loved making this movie and we talked about it for a while. But he got MAD at me when I suggested he probably had to be surgically removed FROM the tank when shooting was done.
He is a BIG guy and former NFL player....But claimd 'plenty of room' inside......
Too much is never enough
reminder.
A couple decent references for you:
"Meeting the Enemy: A Marine Goes Home", Suel D Jones,
"On Killing, The Psychological Cost ...", Dave Grossman.
Both ex-mil. Suel is a friend. Grossman taught this class at West Point. As a former medic, I've seen enough PTSD to not buy into the John Wayne war format. Now-a-days, every other person I pass has it. I feel the vibe. The glory thing helps bury the monster no one wants to look at.

One sided or both, there was enough preceding malice, stupidity, and cowardice to allow the lowest form to occur. A compete failure of humanity. Imo, feeling just about that doesn't fit.
Just saying "just war" is like Himmler's "final solution".
Fortunately for you, there are people who feel differently.

First rule of martial arts - don't start it. Lucky for us that's taught, no?
Lack of justification is on the offense.

"When many people are killed, they should be mourned and lamented. Those who are victorious in war should follow the rites of funerals. Those who defeat others are strong, those who defeat themselves are mighty." Lao Tse
"White Tiger" is also awful, but still, better than the subject.
Think of Moby Dick totally dumbed down for the current dumb Russian audience.

..
I have to confess - I watched it again after this discussion, and even though my general impression remained the same, it did receive some softening.
The key is to treat it not as a war film, but as an allegory... it then begins to make some sense. Overloaded with stinking soviet propaganda, but still whole lot better, than that T-34 crap.
I understand... we are truly splitting a turd here... :)

They used actual T34 tanks in filming "White Tiger". That alone got my attention. Understandably, the German Tiger tank was a replica. The film definitely had some flaws but overall wasn't completely terrible. But then I like tanks and films about them.
Just watched 'Vlad the Impaler' on Prime and was fascinated by its POV. It was a Turkish film explaining that Vlad was all but a devil hiding behind a Christian facade. Never mind the save Christendom Jazz, this Sultan-raised miscreant was a bad egg from birth. This might be the most realistic portrait of a king who would impale people for chuckles. Not recommending the film, mind you.
Considering impaling was perfected by the Ottomans - the skill demanded excellent knowledge of internal anatomy. Skilled impaler will avoid perforating all major organs, thus preventing the quick death. The goal was for the victim to suffer for days before dying slow and agonizing death.
"Vlad--- the inhaler!"
Thank you so much! One of the books I read in my youth contained a very detailed scene, that I still recall in my nightmares from time to time.
I always want to forget it... so I hardly needed yet another reminder! :)

A book by a Russian author Pikul.

Interesting. So many great Russian writers we in the West never heard of. Not long ago I discovered Leonid Andreyev ...he is as good as anyone.
. . . that this is one of the best movies EVER!

Also, he might have been ostracized for previous thug behavior when he was in Boston. Bad press doesn't sell well in theaters. He raised the issues again when he tried making atonements for them.
Still enjoyable as light fare.

"E Burres Stigano?"
What's the last great movie it came from Russia, Burnt by the Sun?
They are producing mostly total crap, but in HUGE volumes. Their population just can't get enough of cheap and idiotic crime serials, so that dominates the landscape.
There have been very, very few decent movies in the last decades. I would mention The Return, Leviathan, and the more recent work by the somewhat obscure director Andrey Smirnov "A Frenchman" - a wonderful 2019 film about life in 1950's USSR.
This thread's subject belongs to their disgusting "New wav" of war films - all horrible, but heavy in propaganda.
Their portrayal of WW@ has always been full of lie and misrepresentations, and this "New Wave" sets new low standard for that... without an exception they are totally disgusting.

having read 'Roadside Picnic' I've been interested in 'The Stalker'
have you seen it Victor [or anyone] ??
wondered what became of it's inevitable companion piece Tale Of The Troika
with regards,
it a Tarkovsky classic. Beautiful, mysterious. More poetry than drama. For me, it has a special attraction: Anatoly Solonitsyn, as great as any modern film actor. "The Mirror,""The Ascent," and many other great films made more so by his presence.
a big bottle of reds. (No pun.) Like the Raven . . .
ah ... having read many of Victor's posts and gaining respect for the nuance of his viewpoint from a cultural perspective his impression seemed rather jaundiced to me ... I'll endeavor to look the film up
thank you
with regards,
booming music, overacting, clever camera tricks, and the "eat your pablum" that childish Hollywood futuristic films usually sling.
Cerebral. Poetic. And with wonderful actors, all. I've watched it innumerable times and look forward to the next viewing.
one of the more bipolar film reviews I've read lately, but thanks ; )
I don't think that you'd steer me wrong unless you were pranking me ...
yet I'm immune ... I even liked 'A Boy & His Dog' ft. a young Don Johnson
this film could never 'out B' that!
best regards,
d
in Russia YOU entertain Dostoyevsky!!!
I was never a Strugatsky fan, always considered their work a fodder for immature pseudo-intellectuals... and I tried The Stalker two or tree times, and bailed out each time. I don't remember the Troika.
Strugatsky's main audience was the technical intelligentsia class.

thanks ... I think
be well,
Clearly, I was talking about their local audience. Watching an ant hill and living inside it are two very different things. :)
